custom dado

Does anyone know where I can get a section dado to match the dado in the picture? It looks like a pretty standard profile but I can't find a matching 58mm profile in any of the high street DIY shops. I only need about 1 meter but the cheapest timber merchant I can find is quoting £120 to produce a cutter to match the profile. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a long shot, but I will have a look at the cutters we have and see if by chance there is a match.

Funnily enough I had exactly the same problem when the gas fire was removed it left a gap in the dado rail.
The dado rail looks exactly the same as your photo, I thought it was a standard profile, but seems it is not.
I couldn't find any local suppliers that stock it.........so I made a shelf to fill the gap.

I reckon it's your perfect excuse to buy a few old hollows and rounds and plane it yourself. I've done similar stuff in my own house and enjoyed making it.

Otherwise you could probably get close with just a block plane, rebate plane, a gouge for the hollow and a lot of sanding.

If you don't fancy doing it by hand and you have a router table, you can always do it with multiple passes/cutter changes.

Hi,

I've checked through all of my cutter profiles but unfortunately dont have anything similar.

The profile is too big to fit on a euro knife so would need doing with a Whitehill 65mm knife, the price you've been quoted is about right to be honest. Legislation means there are 2 knives and 2 limiters that need to be ground which ramps the cost up.

If it's only a few feet I'd make that by hand with H & Rs.
It's not particularly difficult.
I'll have a go if you can send a few inches as a pattern, though the hardest part will be getting the finished bit from Wild Wales to the Garden of England.

There must be someone in Kent with a few H & Rs ??????

I had a similar issue with a fancy windowsill. I drew the shape out on one end of a piece of suitable wood, and used my trusty Stanley combination plane in a series of cuts with different blades to get as close as possible to that shape, without cutting into it. I then carved a bit of hardwood to the negative of the shape I needed, and used that with various grades of sandpaper to work to the final smooth shape. Sounds long-winded, but actually took very little time.

If its to be painted then why not a scratch stock then abrasives, if you get really stuck and are not in a rush pop a sample up to me in Longfield and I will have a go

...ok thanks for all the posts and for offering to help, much appreciate. I no longer have a sample as I had to put back the section I removed so that the painter could finish the job. I ended up using a similar, but not matching, piece for the missing section so I'll check how it looks this evening and may take you up on your offer.
