Hi Guys,

Laburnum - was wet about a week old now, sapwood has shrank - so have curves but no splits thanfully.

(click to large)

Now I was given a log and told it was Holly, however - this was inside - looks like no holly i have ever seen !

Any clues ?

Both just finished with sanding sealer, and buffed with papertowel

Thanks Paul !

Some more pics with some flash to show better the figure/colour - another forum suggested mahonia ?

Nice work!

Wood could be Walnut? Just from the colour, and that it often has a lot of figure around crotch areas!!

Mahonia is yellow so I doubt it's that, not often that big either.

Holly is usually almost grainless to look at IME but maybe it does come in different forms

How big is the "holly" bowl? Reason for asking is that I've never seen mahonia much bigger than about 4" diameter. Could it just be spalting on holly?

The log is 12 inches dia - this bowl is quartersaw from the log at 6 inches dia x 2 high

found this on the web claiming to be spalted holly - so im just not sure now - maybe it is, Ill post some Bark pictures on monday - maybe that'll help ID.

This is Holly, Looks very similar. Click for larger image.

Good finish for just burnished sealer loz.

I'd say the 2nd one could well be holly. It looks very similar to some spalted holly that I've turned a couple of times...

and

both clickable

Both shots are accurate colour representations

Pretty much the same as your Hollow Form Duncan !

Thanks for posting !

Wow, I didn't think holly could be so varied. I have only seen white wood so far. I have a few big chunks of the stuff lying outside, might be worth leaving it to see what happens.
