Computer memory query

just fitted 2 gb of extra ram into my computer, how can i tell if its noticed it and using it.

Control Panel/system - should show you how much memory the machine thinks it has. You just have to trust that it is using it efficiently. Seems to me that by far the best way of speeding up a machine is to reload windows.........

During startup it will show on the BIOS screen how much RAM there is. Or look in BIOS (usually by pressing F1 or Del on startup).

hmm in system properties it only says 1.93Gb of ram, it should say 4 gb as i just put another 2 in there., what now.. :roll:

I am running a MESH desktop computer, had it for 5 years nows, brilliant thing, and also running Windoze XP home edition.
Now i noticed when i fitted them in that the other 2 sticks in there are fitted into blue slots, but these fitted into black slots, could that be it??

if it's really 5yrs old then it's highly likely that it doesn't support more than 2gb of RAM. You need to call Mesh and check.

Yep, and check their website for your BIOS version, there might be an upgrade for it that does accept 4G.

Be very aware though, you can seriously brick your BIOS by flashing it though if you don't follow the instructions to the letter, and sometimes even when you do...

Could be. As wizer said it might be your board will only take 2GB max. Perhaps 2 x 1GB in the Black sockets or 2 x1 GB in the blue, presumably running at a faster speed?

I think socket colours are a legacy thing, you used to have socket 1 & 2 in each pair and both sockets had to be full before the memory would be recognised. The colour differential is to denote the different pairs.

Not sure if that is still the case any more as I think you can use the mem in any sockets, but I could well be wrong.

Contacted Mesh to see what happening with the memory, although i fear its probably not going to work on my machine, so i'll bung it on ebay (the memory that is).
What would i get for it nowadays, its Kingston 2x 1 gb sticks, PC2-5300 CL5 240pin DIMM.

Can you check the Motherboard type in BIOS, we can then work out what, type of memory you need.

Have a look at places like Scan and Aria for RAM prices to give you an idea.

I've bought extra memory for a couple of PCs in the past from Crucial. I downloaded their memory checker software that analysed the motherboard and showed what memory was installed and also what it could be upgraded to along with suitable memory that they sold.

Last time I increased the memory on my desktop PC to 2GB, but when I installed the new memory it just caused the PC to hang. I contacted Crucial customer support who gave me a list of things to try including updating the motherboard BIOS. This all went smoothly and the problem was solved and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

If look at http://www.crucial.com/uk/?click=true you will find the software (it just runs on the computer and doesn't have to be installed/uninstalled).
