hello folks

I have a 2.5hp oil rand compressor and i am struggling to find a place for it within my garage!!!

I have found an area underneath a box which house's one of my camvac's but there is only 4" gap between the top of the compressor and the bottom of the box- the box has a pegboard base

the compressor isnt enclosed other than above- do you think a 4" gap is safe with the heat of the compressor?

I think it is but i do know that when there working hard they do get hot so wanted a 2nd opinion.

doesnt sound like a great idea to me - especially as the camvac will be full of inflamable dust.

is there nothing else you could move into that space to make room for the compressor somewhere else.

The other option being to site the compresser outside the shop in a noise insulated box and run an airline in

btw are we talking about an electric compressor or a petrol motor one ?

electric

the metal drrum of the camvac doesnt concern me as theres peg board then 2" of extratherm then 3/4" of ply before the base of the metal camvac- and because the filters clog easily theres never more than an 1" of dust in there before i clean it out-
i'm more aware of wood being 4" away

an outside box is a no go and i'm really struggling for room- maybe i'll try it for a day and keep a close eye on it to see how hot it does get- i suppose i could line above the compressor with an alternative material or paint the wood with flame retardent paint?!?!?!?

A few years ago when I worked in a garage we had a very large compressor, not sure of HP but was more than capable of blowing lorry tyres up quickly. It was in the corner of the store room and boxed in with a solid roof, back and both sides. Across the frount were iron bars to support the racking above.

It ran like this 6 days a week for 8 years to my knowledbe without any problems. Although as one member of staff found out the cylinders on the top got hot enough to burn skin.

It sounds fine to me George. As long as it's vented. If you are overly concerned you could rig up some PC Case style fans. Put one at the bottom blowing inside the case and one on the opposite side at the top to exhaust the heat. Basically the same idea as a computer case. OTT IMHO.

yep its definatley vented tom as its open to the main garage on two sides- its only above it which is tight on space all around it theres plenty.

.

if it's open sided.... then basically it's just a 'shelf' on top...?

i'm also guessing it doesn't run continuously... say 5 mins every half hour max..?

i can see you having no problems at all.....

yep a shelf ontop is a good way to picture it

- its a strange compressor as it has a 2.5hp motor but only two 8 litre tanks!!! so when i'm hollowing and using it to blow out dust it will run for 14 seconds every 3-5 minutes- but then this process lasts about an hour just while i hollow a vessel out- so it wont be running like that all day (it takes exactly 14 seconds to top up the tanks which then gives me 2-3 blow outs of a vessel depending on size etc)

Don't see it being a problem at all George, the motor cooling fan will be moving local air, in fact, dependant on the configuration of the motor/compressor housing, a front panel from the camvac housing to the floor with an opening each end may even help the flow of cooling air passed the compressor cylinders.
