Right, I've read through all of the Comp bits and I think I'm doing this right (albeit at the eleventh hour!) by creating a WIP thread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brief: I will design and make a counter top multi drawer unit out of hardwood for the kitchen. It will house all of those annoying little bits that typically one has nowhere to store. It should be strong and with a simplistic design. It should employ a suitable finish and use some joinery that I have not attempted before.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My main hurdle is milling my lumber to size as I have only just aquired a band saw. I dont own any jointers planers etc.

Therefore I will be using recycled wood rather than starting from boards.

I have been given a map drawer unit which has seen better days.

(ARGH!! deleted the photos somehow before I took it apart!) If I find them I'll slot them in here.

Taken apart, I now have a pile of oak.

Having never used cabinet construction I have learnt a huge amount in taking this apart, about how to reduce the quantity of timber required to make something like this.

Also where the joints have failed is where corners have been screwed together with whatever screws seem to have been available.

I have dug out the design I drew up back in May

Having removed any split or madly marked wood, I have selected these four lengths in the middle to use for the main carcass construction.

The intention at this point is to give all of the wood a scraping to remove any varnish, plane the surfaces lightly then rip down to thickness on my band saw.

this should leave me with 3/8th stock and will allow for a continuous grain to flow around the top and sides.

Simplistic beauty is what I'm aiming for here. Something to test and stretch my skills, provide a functional piece of furniture which is also attractive.

The drawers are to be made from a continuous piece across the front. Not sure I'm going to have enough time now to make dovetailed drawers but hey in for a penny!!

No, handles, just finger holes to pull the drawers open.

Approx dimensions will be 27" long, 8" high and 6 1/4" deep. These may change as I go along.

Right, to the shed!!
