Hi Folks,

Gave colouring a little bash on this piece (sorry, wood was mislabelled as spalted beach, maybe it's just beech?). Anyway, measures 120mm by 60mm.

The outside has that distressed farmhouse look about it. Personally I like it. Inside it looks as though the stain has gone to the bottom a bit. Good to see you aren't abandoning your 'artistic tendencies' Lee. Keep 'em coming

The colouring and distressing is not to my personal taste. But hold the phone! The form is lovely! Fantastic Lee, you've cracked it. This form is on my to do list actually. It's one I really like.

hehe I think I have that one on my wall  (Just don't tell him)

LOL Tom.

It really is a beautiful form isn't it.

I was very pleased with the way mine turned out, took my time with it and hit the zone so to speak.

Really enjoyable form to turn too, had good tool control and leaned a lot about my bowl gouge control.

Cheers.

Nice one Lee.

The form is very attractive, just seems "right".

Distressing is not my favourite effect but my wife loves it and I think you have achieved it very well. Its always a subjective assessment for anything like this.

Keep posting!

Another nice one Lee, personally like the colouring and shape that you’ve achieved. Although just wondering if perhaps an additional colour might enhance the visual aspect of this piece.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for your comments.

Not sure about another colour Santos, never tried colouring before so I don't have any previous experience.

The piece actually looks more striking in real life, the photos are a bit washed out but I've recently bought a light tent so should be providing better piccies from now on.

Cheers.

Don’t worry, neither do I Lee. Never attempted anything like this before, so quite possibly I’m wrong here. :)

Lovely shape to the form, Lee ...
Thats a little cracker.
I'm guessing from your measurements and the pics, - he's a relatively deep wee fella, and the deeper. the trickier in general ! ...
And the colouring is always a nice thing to try - I've not done a huge amount of it, but its fun and 'something different' - which is always a good thing to attempt.

Great shape.. he's come out really nicely !

Cheers ..
Jenx :D

Hiya Jenx,

It is a lovely form, visually very appealing.

The bowl depth is not far off the overall diameter, felt great gettin in there with the gouge!

Got a real hankering to do a hollow form now :? :D :? :D

Hi Lee

I saw the pic and thought it was a pleasing form straight away, ( before I saw your reference to my bowl)

Thank you it is very fulfilling that you thought my bowl worthy of getting a reference from.

You are making huge steps and this bowl shows this. Often experimenting with colour, texturing etc will pay far bigger dividends in the long run than staying with what you know is safe for you.

It is quite interesting to play around with the colours by bending different ones together while they are still wet. Be mindful that too much red and blue together can make a muddy/dirty mix.

A good way of doing it taught to me by Nick Arnull is to have test plates. Pieces of scrap wood divided up into sections. Play around in each different section. You can explore loads in the time it takes to do one bowl. Also if you get it wrong it does not matter.

Keep them coming
