Coffee Tables

I am relatively new here so thought i should share some pictures of some of my work. I made these some time ago when i had more time on my hands. Now with a young family and growing work commitments time in the workshop is scarce. I do have a couple of project plan for Christmas presents so watch this space and i will try to include pictures as i proceed but i seem to get too involved in the work and forget to take pictures.

great stuff. i never seem to get the opportunity to play with dovetails, hope that when i do they look something like yours they are great.

Really like them mate, especially the elm one. The more figure the better. Which is a bit of a bummer because I just got a boatload of free cherry!!

very nice, I like them both, particularily the corners of the elm table where you have taken the effort to match the waney edges. You are obviously accomplished at dovetails.

That's exactly why I made the table a good bit of dovetail practice.

Were these hand planed?

First it was dimensioned on the planer then trued off by hand (the elm had quiet a bit of tare out after the planer) and finally sanded prior to finish.

If you really want some Max a few beer tokens will get you some, I have only paid £50 to get it all milled and there is enough to last me years!!

Dlow, did you have to re-inforce the corners to add strength or are the dovetails strong enough by themselves? I really like the simlpicity of the table.

I love the Burr Elm example, I think it's the juxtaposition of the glassy surface, sharp arris and crisp dovetails with the cleverly aligned natural waney edges...

It initially reminded me of a bit from The Hitchikers Guide about how in an infinite universe, almost all useful things grow naturally somewhere; clearly you've found yourself a coffee-table elm!

I am curious about this too. Is the wany edged table really just three boards with no bracing etc?

Basically, yes the wany edged table is just three boards dovetailed at the corners. It was glued up as one long board and cut in to three allowing the continuity of the edge. There is no other reinforcement just relying on the dovetail join. I made it 4 years ago now and it is still going strong with my two young kids using it as a toy storage area I am very impressed with how well the danish oil finish has held up under this rough use.

Still working on a table for the wife hope to finish it in time for Valentine ’s Day.
