Don't worry, Jim, those two-piece cap irons are the best thing since sliced bread. I have them fitted to all my bench planes :D

Trust me Paul...I will still sleep tonight mate...

There are clearly pros and cons for both systems but what I do know for sure is that the thickness of the chip breaker...be it broken in half or whole...is of importance in the smoothness of the plane and the feel.

The old breaker suffers from being cheap pressed steel for economy reasons and I think the cap does rest better on a flat surface rather than the curved spring in the old one...where it tends to slip the whole assembly on tightening if you are not careful.

Also the bent metal variety tend to cause thin blades to bend slightly, which means that they only contact the frog in two places, leading to chatter. The two-part cap irons hold the blade flat. A great design.

You like the things Paul...I don't and I wouldn't have one on any bench plane I owned. If they're so good, I wonder why Norris never fitted them?

Good job I've seen the light and now use BU exclusively :lol: - Rob
