ebay hunting...then fitted with a clifton blade and a LN chipbreaker......had to extend the adjuster though. surface ground then hand lapped to perfection......i made the rear tote just after getting the 98....Karls handles are fantastic his geometry is spot on for my hands.

first plane i reach for.

Oh - Yeah. It's fun too!

oh yes i'll second that.....so is a night at spearmint rhino........makes the price of a Holtey positively cheap.

I own all the LN range

Blimey, I thought my 9 was a lot!!!!!

Interesting that you say your full set of Cliftons have the same quality of finish as the LNs Ian.

I only bought 1 Clifton, a small sample from which to draw conclusions

There were many little things that lead me to my conclusion, some examples are that my Clifton did not have the blade machined all round as the LN has, the side had a small grinding mark in it and the surface finish on the sole + sides was courser grinding than the LNs.

There was, in geneal a feel of less attention to detail all round including silly things like all the screw slots on the LN pointing in exactly the same direction. Small details, but as an engineer, i appreciate them.

The Clifton was purchased a couple of years ago.

Interestingly, i have only honed blades and then used all my LNs, all my LVs and my Clifton. No 'fettling' and all worked superbly from the box.

See, that recent thread about understanding engineers was accurate after all

acccht ure jist startin

read your reply Tony and no i didnt have any of your probs...i found the grinding actually very good....looking at my no 7 clifton it is a beauty...grindings lovely as are the others.

One plane in particular stood out as being rather poor and that was my LN no 4 1/2...i counted 3 faults in it so if i was comparing it to my 4 1/2 clifton then the clifton would be on top..but i also found a fault in my 51/2 clifton and love the 5 1/2 LN...i find it important to compare like for like..
I also prefer the colour of the clifton...the green against the slightly chrome look of the casting as opposed to LN's and LV's...but thats just personal taste.

i will say that none come close to the Holteys but then again you can buy the whole range for the price of one of Karls so i wasnt expecting the finish to be anywhere near.

Interesting Ian. I might have been a little unlucky.
At the end of the day, I did not care a jot about the poorer finish or the grinding mark on the Clifton - worked as well as my LNs and LVs and so I was a very happy chap.

Ian

Luckily, I don't like infills, otherwise I'd be in deep trouble!!!

Strangely, I HATE that. It implies the cosmetics (supposed) are more important than correct tension.

(There is a horrendously labour intensive trick to get both)
