What is your opinion of Clifton planes in general?

Hi Andy,

I have three Cliftons #4.5, #6 & #7. I think they are superb and they are my planes of choice. The oldest one is about 2 years old. No trouble so far and I don't envisage them giving significant problems.

Cheers

Only ever used one for a few minutes on some softwood at a show, which is hardly a test, so I can't comment. I must admit the grey iron doesn't wow me into remedying that lack.

Cheers, Alf

Have clifton #s 3 & 7 bench as well as a 410 shoulder plane, all of which I find superb. Very little fettling required.

Though I haven't tried an LN bench plane, comparing to my LN blocks, I'd say out of the box is just a hair's breadth below LN (blade needs (slightly) more work and both bench plane beds (? under the frog) had a little spare green paint in the corners. The soles didn't need any work.

Now they're all set up, for many jobs it's just a matter of which is closest to hand. Haven't found either company's blades lacking in terms of sharpenability/durability, be it ebony, rock maple, rosewoods or the soft stuff.
