hi
i dont do much turning other than pens at the moment, but i would love to turn goblets and a few bowls, i have a perform ccsl lathe and would like a chuck to fit it, i currently use a very small chuck but i am not sure this would be up to holding wood big enough for goblets or bowls securely, so can the panel recomend anything and where i might find it.
i did think about the patriot, but i think for me it is overkill.
thanks

Hi Steve, I got my first chuck a couple of weeks ago, its a supernova2 and is absolutly fantastic. I considered a patriot but for about the same money on ebay the nova came with a free set of pin jaws(hugely useful and about £45 on their own) as well as the standard dovetail jaws. I wouldn't think a patriot or supernova2 would be overkill, I for one am glad I splashed out on mine and would say it was worth every penny.

Hi Steve,

I have the perform CCBL lathe and patriot chuck, the biggest item I have turned to date using the chuck is a 12" x 3" bowl, the smallest was a couple of tea light holders last week approx 2" x 3" both of these were using the standard jaws supplied ( I only have the standard jaws ). I was in the same position as you 12 months ago and decided on the patriot, it was one of the best items I've bought and of course with with the vast array of jaws available you have the best of both worlds.

Hope this helps

Steve :)

did this include vat too, i cant find it below £145 , if so where did you it from please?

thank you jt, tis funny because i actually wrote to this guy last night and asked if this comes with a 1x8tpi insert, i am waiting for the answer.

The Supanova and the Patriot are basically the same with the jaws interchangeable. Only difference is the Supa is now made in Asia, that's why Sorby decided to do the Patriot for themselves in this country apparently. I've had a Supanove for about 2 years, it's had a right hammering and even got some rust on it in storage, only problem I find is the screws for the jaws get lost easily in the shavings if you aren't careful as the pin jaws only use one screw per jaw.

You have to specify the the size of insert you want with your order(in the paypal part) and they send the appropriate one with your chuck. They will definately have that size(same as mine)

I started on a little Arundel Junior a few years back, and got a SuperNova ... made a HUGE difference to what I could attempt and do. Great buy. A few weeks back I bought a stripped-down Patriot, so I had 2 chuck bodies too hand ... but all the SN jaws I'd collected work just fine. Now, on a Wivamac lathe.

Patriot or SN - get one ... they'll be great now, and still doing a great job if you buy a different (bigger?) lathe in the future ...

Cheers

Toby

They moved manufacturing to China and for a while where actually shipping chucks, jaws etc. in boxes that said made in NZ according to previous posts (that I can't find!). I bought the Nova with the pin jaws and can't say I have used them much, then got the patriot which is a definate improvement on an already good chuck (and looks better, has a lower carbon footprint and will keep our friends at Robert Sorby in jobs). Buy the Patriot Steve, you know it makes sense :)

well thats it then, mentioned them both to the wife, and she insisted i bought the sorby  as she is buying it for me for christmas.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago i wanted a new chisel, so she also wants me to buy a bowel gauge(as she calls it) bless her.

I think that's the first I've read as such - I've always wondered. Not that it makes much difference to me - the jaws I have my eye on are similarly priced in both versions.

I have 2 nova chucks and haven't had any problems with them other than caused by user error -when I first got my deluxe chuck it came with power grip jaws and I thought I'd be ultra cautious and tighten the hex screws as tight as I could. I think it was about 3 years before I could get them off again, and that was by drilling out the screws. In the mean time I bought a spare chuck to hold step jaws.
