Hi

The first thing you need to identify is the spindle thread size of the lathe you intend to buy in the future, then let this guide you to the available options.

There are plenty of other threads on here relating to chuck choice - have a look at those and maybe also consider other suppliers.

Regards Mick

Hi.

The most popular is M33 x 3.5mm (Ref T38) ?
In Super Nova I can change Spindle Thread.

Can I change thread in axminster chucks ?

Hi Dominik,
I think MIck's advice is correct.

First decide on your lathe but I think it's wise when buying your lathe to keep in mind the most common headstock threads (3/4" x 16 TPI, 1" x 8 TPI, M33 x 3.5, 1 1/4" x 8TPI and 1 1/2" x 6TPI) since if you buy a lathe which matches one of these it will make finding a good chuck much easier and give you more choice.

I am a fan of Axminster chucks so the opinion that follows will be biassed...

Without doubt Axminster have the widest range of chuck jaws and accessories of anyone and their chucks also feature a novel idea which is that the jaw carriers (mounting jaws) can be purchased separately and left attached to the jaws. This means that changing jaws can be much quicker than on other chucks where 8 hex-head screws need to be removed and replaced. The jaws and jaw carriers (mounting jaws) are just unscrewed from the scroll by turning the chuck key and a new set inserted. All jaw carriers (mounting jaws) are interchangeable between all Axminster chucks except the Junior chuck. The Clubman chucks are pretty good chucks but they are not as precise (due to the imprecise nickel plating) as the old SPC chuck or I expect the new Evolution. As in most things you get what you pay for.

For me the O'Donnell jaw set (50mm plus the inserts) is the most useful set of jaws in Axminster's range. So that'd have to be on my list of jaws. I have filed down a C-jaws morse taper carrier to fit the dovetail of my 50mm O'D's and this makes them even more useful IMHO.

Another chuck you also may wish to consider, which has the advantage of the Axminster chucks, is the Versachuck from the Toolpost. In price this falls somewhere between the Clubman range and Evolution chucks. It was modelled on the old Axminster Super Precision Chuck but I do not have one.

This has a much wider range of backplates available for it than the Axminster chucks and will take jaws from Axminster and from other manufacturers as well, but the jaw carriers (mounting jaws) are different from Axminster's and each set only fits a particular manufacturer's jaws.

Other chucks and jaws are available
