I got my xmas prezzie early in the form of a sorby multi tip hollower :ho2 , I won't have anything to unwrap xmas morning but who cares I'm in charge of cooking xmas dinner for the inlaws, so won't have time to play then anyway.
I took it for a bit of a spin this afternoon and am completely in love with it, I made this from spalted sycamore, its 6" across by about 3 1/2" tall and hollow! The walls are quite thick at 10mm as there is a knot on the underside with 4 small cracks radiating from it and I didn't want it to break.

Its finished with a hard wax, comments appreciated.

Johnny T, To hell with the inlaws let them sing for their dinner. Get into the workshop and turn more of those lovely pieces. And if you do make one big enough that you can fit in. REgards Boysie.

Thanks chaps :)
Boysie
George , I reverse mount them with a screw chuck and cut a tenon, mount that in the chuck tightly and cut off as neatly as possible with a skew.In the case of this one the hole was a good size for my pin jaws so I reverse mounted it(took some getting straight!) and very gently finished the base.

cheers JT

Nice looking piece JT :D
I was just getting into hollow forms so can't wait to get back at it :(
I think that the RS200 is a nice tool to use, especially the scraper which does give a nice finish.

Cheers paul, I haven't got round to putting the scraper tip in mine yet, the rounded cutter leaves quite a nice finish on the inside though, its a really good tool. I,ve also cobbled together an Oland tool, a bit of a beast at 27" long with a 1/4 cutter and I'm finding that good to use too, I made a small xmas tree ornament from log to ready to sand using it.

Magic, Johnny... thats excellent ! .
I have to agree.. I'm chuffed to bits with the RS200 tool... been using it on goblets with the small round cutting tip, and have even started 'hoggin-out' the insides of bowls with it... its so forgiving... you can be 'ham-fisted aggressive' all the way to 'dilicate little wisps of fulff', and all points in between, and it refuses to dig-in or catch... wish I could say the same for the rest of my tools !

Even the bigger scraper tip is a pussycat of a thing...

My favourite bit of equipment in the workshop by some margin !

As a relative learner.. I should probably put it aside and learn to do everything the 'proper' way no doubt... but the thing is too easy to pick up and use... and such a delight to do so.

BTW.. how do you get on sharpening it ? I 'top it up' with a diamond file, and when it needs a proper re-grind.. I got a Sorby sharpening table from Turners Retreat, that fits into the toolrest hole, and comes with an 80-degree table extension, - and use this on the lathe against an MDF Disc with Aluminium Oxide facing, makes life very easy ! .

Very nice,Johnny - lovely figuring,very nice shape,excellent finish :D

Isn't the "proper" way the one that works best for you ? If so,you already are.

I just sharpen mine with a stone at the moment(for the want of something better) but your method sounds good Jenx hows about a piccy of the set up :)
