I am wishing to re-grind my LN BE chisels and use them for paring (mostly dovetail work in maple).

What is the best primary angle for this?

Any other tips?

Rob Cosman was using one with 17 deg grind and small steeper microbevel, when cleaning waste from dovetail sockets at Westonbirt this summer.

Can only guess honing angle, maybe 25??

He said"Don't tell Tom" ;-)

I do mine at 32 deg (final polish angle, grind is 23 degrees) and have no problems in hardwood ;-) some will find this very steep, but when sharp, seems to me to make little difference. Softwood might be another issue all together, and low as possible beneficial.

Super low is not helpful if it leads to premature edge failure....

Getting em really lean I think helps definetly on pine.

But I mean you can pare with any angle I would have thought.

There is a pleasing side of grinding at say 20 degrees or less.....Feels like you can see more of what your doing.....long sexy looking bevel too.

Must remember that its sharpened that way though. One day in a hurry, I used one with a mallet .....just me not good.....unless you like regrinding off a nick.
