Chisel Honing

Good morning, this is my first post on any type of forum so hope I don't appear too daft in getting this wrong or the rather basic nature of my question. I have just bought a set of LN Bevel Edge Chisels and noticed that they recommend additional honing. Are they suggesting simply honing a secondary bevel or further polishing of the chisel back and primary bevel?

LN will probably only need a very light back flattening and polish out of the box. And the cutting edge will need a gentle hone to get a good secondary bevel.
Their steel is supposed to get "better" with subsequent grindings - as you work your way in from the edge, but I have not ground mine enough to appreciate that yet?

There should be lots of stuff about David Charlesworth's method on the Forum & lots of other sharpening stuff if you do a search.

Welcome Andy - there are plenty of forumites who do own the LNs and I'm sure you'll get more opinions in due course.

I agree with harbo, a little back flattening might be in order. Myself I don't bother putting a secondary bevel on chisels, I think the key is to give them a light touch on a fine diamond stone and strope frequently, this will certainly keep the edge.

ditto harbo and waka, but gently gently, and welcome to the forum mate. I have one LN bevel edge (i have one LN chisel!!!) but plenty of fine steel from other brands, but am still a little jealous!!

I agree with harbo, a little back flattening might be in order.

With LN's the backs probably need no more than a polish, and for a beginner leaving them alone (for now) might be a good decision, since the backs can be worked later at no detriment.

There is a potential, when attempting to flatten, of introducing convexity, and avoiding this is critical.

Many thanks to all for the warm welcome and welcome advice. The responses are exactly the type of help that I was hoping for from the forum. I wasn't expecting to make anyone jealous though. I will now take chisels to stones (carefully) with a a little more confidence. Maybe one day I will be able to provide similar advice to others? Thanks again.
