Hi all
Just got the Chestnut buffing system today and tried it on a pyro`d bowl and have to say its come out fairly ok but not the superduper gloss finish I was expecting :? . To be fair It was only sanded to 180 before pyroing it so maybe a bit much to expect a high gloss finish. No doubt Terry would say to stick with it and use finer grits before polishing so I`ll try it on something else later. I saw on youtube a demo of the Beal setup the other day and I assume the Chestnut is not much different so I suppose its knowing how much of each of the different compounds to use. I notice John`s post recently about getting used to his Beal system.
Cheers
Steve

i also got off on the wrong foot with mine and expected great things from my first bowl, now i have used it a few times its magic, puts a good shine on my stuff and even the wife loves it ( have bowls, platters and mushrooms on show inside).
Still throws off quite a bit of debris from the cloth though, but hopefully this will stop as i use it more..

We had a visit from one of our French neighbours this afternoon. We had all been round at one of our other neighbours last eve for aperitifs which turned into a full scale, lovely dinner washed down with an Audien speciality, sangria blanch, white sangria, 3 litres of it! I had asked if they would like to have a look at my workshop with an definite yes. So they arrived this afternoon and were enthralled, because the lady had bought a cedar bowl, that I had made and given then a few years back. She had loaned it to her daughter-in-law and it came back with some bad water marks on the outside.

The bowl was still perfectly round, no movement, so I decided the best way to get rid was to put it back on the lathe, skim the marked polished surface of and use my new toy, the Beall buffing jobbie (you see, this is on subject!). So on it went and I just skimmed the surface with a spindle gouge, sanded it down and started the buffing. I went through all 3 steps and handed the now gleaming bowl back to her. They, the couple and their visiting 15 year old grandson, were well impressed and so was I, as well as relieved!

Easily done and a lovely result too. If the Chestnut system is as good, then it can't be bad!!

Hi Steve

Have you had chance to use the Buffing System again?

Important tips are to make sure that the finish you're buffing is dry (and buffable!), and use the white compound very sparingly, the wax stick even more sparingly.

Preparation is of course very important too, so getting a good finish to begin with will give the best result at the end of the process.

Keep us posted.

Yes I`d like to know that too  I was looking at finding a way to make the Beal ones fit but if Chestnut ones are coming soon.....
Steve

Ps no not had chance to try it again yet Terry

Hi folks
Had another go with the Chestnut system tonight and really pleased with the result now guess its just getting used to it. Think I was a bit heavy with the wax last time. Made this the other day not totally dry and hasn`t split yet !!,sanded to 320 grit and straight onto the Chestnut system.
