Casting the detective

I'm a great fan of detective novels. Over time and reading a lot from a particular author, I build up a picture in my minds eye as to what the detective 'looks like' and what he sounds like.

So when an early Rebus was broadcast (on radio IIRC) with John Hannah as Rebus, I thought 'wrong'. Then when they cast Ken Stott in the TV series, I thought 'Perfect'.

Similarly with Wallander. The less said about Branagh the better. In contrast, Krister Henriksson is absolutely spot on.

So we come to another favourite detective of mine, DCI Banks. Stephen Tomlinson is, to my eye, so wrong but who would be better? I can't think of any actor at the moment. Daniel Craig, maybe?

Are there any other fans out there of Rebus and Wallander?

I second Wallander. The Swedish version is great.
About the only program I look forward to watching nowadays .

Beck (the Martin Beck series is worth a read as well)

Has been made into films but not translated from Swedish into English.

I tried to persuade my friend to watch Wallander, he said it will probably be too depressing being Swedish. I pointed out that Eastenders is one of the most watched programmes in the UK. (I rest my case!)

Detective novels and TV has never been my thing, but I drifted into Wallander via the KB version (when will he learn to stop acting).

Now I find that I am quite disappointed there will be no more Wallanders, as Krister Henriksson has decided he doesn't want to carry on with the character.

Yes, I'm a fan of the DCI Banks novels, though I think the later ones have "gone off" a bit. Also agree that Stephen Tomkinson is nothing like my mental picture. I had Ken Stott in the role, but I guess he's too identified with Rebus.

Big Rebus fan, and totally agree that John Hannah was not the Rebus I pictured. Trouble is, Ken Stott is also not it - bit too old, hagared and abrasive for my interpretation of Rebus. Supposed to be ex-SAS, bit of a ladies man (in a rought diamond kind of way) and a borderline alcoholic. Although Kenn Stott could be 1 and 3, I don't see him as a ladies man. Not really sure who I picture as Rebus to be honest, probably closer to Warren Clark (Dalziel in Dalziel and Pasco) - the same world weary cynicism and hangdog attitude.

The Beeb have shown the first 13 episodes so far and another 13? have been made by the Swedes - cannot wait to see them.

I am slowly working my way through the books.

Another great Swedish production is the Millennium Trilogy - fantastic books and great films.

I think that they have already broadcast them but I'm sure they will be repeated at some point. There was a series we watched that were based on..rather than by.

The bad news is that the BBC are doing more Branagh...pass me the handkerchief..sob..sob.

We watched the first series and have been recording it again.
