Can you smell burning?

HI all,
You may know that we were burgled a few weeks ago, and the bar stewards stole my IBM Microdrive from my computer. They don't seem to make these any more (at least, not at a miserly 1G - 4g doesn't work, the OS is different apparently) so I've bought a CF card instead, It works fine in the camera.

When I come to download and put it into my computer (HP Pavillion) I get a strong smell of burning instantly, one or two seconds. The card works fine if I use my USB card reader, but directly into the machine, no.

Can anyone enlightem me as to why, please?

Not sure if this will help but the first thing I would do
Turn the powerr off
Take the side off,
Earth yourself
Then make sure all internal connections are fully connected as it is possible a connection could have worked loose!

I never thought of that It fits in the same slot as the Microdrive did, so I assumed the slot was just as fine as it always has been. I take a look. Thanks.

I used to get that smell when I was burning CD's. I fitted a chimney and that seemed to help.
