I recieved mine a week ago but only got around to playing with it this evening (it's my fourth router... ).

But has any one besides me had any problems with this router?

I switch it on and it's sounds like the speeds fluctuating a bit. Sounds like it's trying to speed up but can't quite do it. And no matter what setting I switch the dial to I still have the same problems.

Worst of all, I switch it off and as soon as the collet stops spinning smoke creeps out throught the top of the router - smells kind of plasticcy... NOT GOOD!!! The air coming from beneath the router's also a little bit warmer than what I'm used to from my other three routers.

I'll get in touch with Screwfix, they're usually very good at swapping things (heh, I ended up with a free biscuit jointer once, giving me a nice, tidy profit! )

Hope everyone else has checked theirs and that they're okay.
DON'T JUST LEAVE IT IN A BOX FOR A WEEK, like I did! :? Check it.

Well J, mine was well packed and came with one 1/4" collet and a 1/2" one installed, a dust extractor port, a plastic shield, 30mm guide bush, trammel point, micro adjustable side fence, and an assortment of screws for the dust port and guide bush. It also had the manual. I have tried mine and it works as sweet as a nut. I did find the plunge lock a little alwkward to use as it locks in the up position unlike my DeWalt which locks on the down and is on the opposite side. Still a good buy for the price and is now my sixth router! :D

Mailee,
I got my router today, my first ever order from screwfix.
It wasn't particularly well packaged, Inside the freud box, the plasticy bits were in an open plastic bag, but all the rest of the bits were just rattling round in the box with the router. I found a wing nut quite firmly lodged in the air vent of the router body

I don't believe I got all of the accessories, Any chance you can post a complete list of what was in the box?
The first thing I noticed was there was only one collet, I think it's the 1/4inch one.
Also, there was no instuction book, just a registration card and a thank you from freud.
Should I have expected more?

Thanks
J

Hi J
I got two from screw fix and although not particularly packed well both contained the same parts as Mailee described. The 1/2" collet is already installed. If you are not happy get in touch with ScrewFix I've always found them really helpful. As I've got two manuals I would gladly post you one if you wish?

Andy

I concur with Mailee and Andy on the packaging and content. Box was a bit tatty but contents were fine.

Would be interested to know how Screwfix deal with this one. Stay in touch

regards

I'm sure I checked in the router for the 1/2icnh collet, but i'll check again just incase.

There was no Trammel point thingy, but there was a black plastic ring with numbers on it, any idea what this is?

Also, just remembered, the freud badge on the router looks like it's taken a bit of a beating.

I'll post a pic of what I got later.

Screwfix responded to my email by arranging for collection and refund of the router. They said they would normally just swap it out, but as they don't sell it anymore they couldn't do that.
I've told them i'd rather keep it as it was a good deal. I hope they come back with a decent offer of compensation. Maybe a starter selection of router bits :)
Anyone know how much a replacement collet should be?
Looking Here
it seems quite expensive, that's 20% of the router price, and there will probably be delivery on that.

Andy, thanks, thats very kind, i'll send a PM shortly

UPDATE:
Screwfix responded with an offer of £10 screwfix voucher, or the refund.
I'm not sure i'd buy from them again.

j, The plastic ring with the numbers on it is for the guide fence. It fits around the thumbscrew for the micro adjustment and gives you a readout of the fine adjustment. Hope this is clear enough? I can always take a pic for you of mine if need be.

Andy, Thanks very much.

Mailee, Thanks, do the numbers correspond to mm?
I am sure it'll all become clear once I get the manual from Andy.

I did check, and there is definately no 1/2inch collet in the router.

What do you think of the screwfix offer? £10 voucher seems a bit poor for £20+ parts missing.
I really should try the router aswell, i'll dig out the 1/4inch Aldi router set I got a couple of years ago and try it.

Thanks again,
J

Hi Folks,

So I was not the only one! :)

Mine arrive missing both collets, the collet nut and the knobs to attach the fence. Quick call to screwfix and they said they would replace it.

They phoned back a hour later to say the could only offer a refund as they had none in stock.

I offered to purchase the spares if they would cover my costs and after search about they decided the spares cost too much so back it went.

Still waiting for the refund to appear on my statement.....

Sometimes I am sure it would be more cost effective to just leave the thing rather than send a courier. They once sent a courier around to pick up an item that was worth £2.99! Crazy!

Cheers

Ed

Such a shame,
Screwfix are probably going to chuck it in the bin or sell it for next to nothing.

Did you try contacting Freud? I'm going to try that and hope that they are a little more helpful.

From what i've been reading lately, this is becoming more common of screwfix, seems like they just don't care any more.

I need to try the router and make sure it's actually working, if it is then i'll probably hang on to it. Otherwise it'll go back, and i'll be saving my pennies for a Triton.

J,

"Screwfix are probably going to chuck it in the bin or sell it for next to nothing"

My thoughts exactly, what a waste.

I didn't contact Freud as I could only find the US details. As always I found the UK site after it was too late.

Here is the link anyway http://www.freudtoolinguk.co.uk

I think the collets and nuts are the same as the DW625? Well the Trend collets claim to fit both. Best check though as I may be wrong.

Best of luck.

I hope you have more luck with Freud than I ask about a problem with the circular saw that screwfix used to do but it looks like they dont any more ( the part to lift the guard was not as long as it should have been, so to lift the guard your finger or thumb was next to the blade, not good if it is spinning  ).

So I rung them around 10/8/06 and they said they would get back to me but I have now seen the same saw being sold in Toolstation FCS184, look at the big pic and see the part that you lift the guard with  .

I dont think it should be sold like that

Hi,

after reading of the couple of bad deliveries I feel bad about recommending this. I can only suggest that you talk with Freud before returning them to Screwfix as for the price it is a lot of machine.

Mine is fine with all the bits there (he says guiltily). I have just swapped the collet and nut with the one for my DW625 and they seem to be interchangeable. Perhaps someone else can confirm that. For me this is good news as I was hoping to use the Freud in my router table to free up the DW and this suggests I can use my Eliminator chuck with it - I'll check with the supplier and see if they agree it's interchangeable first.

Colin

Colin,
Thank you for recommending this, I'm sure most people that got it had no problems at all. It's a great price, and by all accounts a great machine.

I did try and power up the machine last night, just to make sure it isn't a complete dud. It sped up to full speed in a few seconds, I then turned the speed down using the dial, seemed work ok, the dial did get stuck around 4, with a bit of persuasion made it down to minimum speed.

I rang freud last night, and spoke to the MD :) He was the only one in the office and said he'd get someone to call me today. He did mention that they have two new models out very soon, the FT2200 which is a slightly revised version of the FT2000, and the FT3000 which is a new "beast" with plenty of "oomph", designed for table use (probably in the same league as the triton.

They rang me, and asked what parts were missing, They did say that the trammel point is not included as standard. (Actually the first person I spoke to didn't know what one was)
I guess it's no big deal.

Not at all mate - It was a good call. :D

It's a good machine that I had considered buying in the past - but I bought a triton instead. I only snapped one up because it was a bargain and having something readily available for handheld use would have been good.

The "do I really need it" guilt went away when screwfix picked it up. :D

Hi j, it is my mistake about the trammel point, it was not included in mine. I was thinking of the Trend one at the time. Everything else I listed was included. Sorry for the confusion. Hope you get it sorted out as it is a very good router for the money.

Can you have too many routers?
I have three -
the big Triton by far the best router I have used - ideal for a table - a little heavy for hand held.
A DW615 1/4" - idea as a hand held and for dovetail jigs
A 1250W B&Q Performance Pro - the first router I bought - worked well but lacks the power.
I want to buy the baby Triton but have a guilt complex about owning four routers?? I suppose with the numbers some people have I should just buy it or give the PP away?
Help with my problem is required as I am going to D&M tomorrow.
Barry

Guys

have you all checked the 1/4" collet

cus the two I have are no where near 1/4"

The two 1/2" collets are fine

Please check yours and let me know

Andy

Just checked they are 8mm

Bin the B&Q, then no feelings of guilt when you buy the baby Triton.

Chris

I spoke to Screwfix the other day about my router and they're willing to offer me a full refund, since they don't have any more in stock now.

However, before I go ahead with that, I've left a message with Freud, so hopefully I'll get a reply from them shortly, and, since this is still within its six-month warranty, hopefully, they'll be able to sort it out (although, I understand my postage to them isn't covered by their warranty...)

*Fingers crossed.* Although, both my MP3 player and Xbox have started playing up recently and I've had no luck with them as the warranty's are long gone...
