I've had a little CamVac CV286 extractor which has worked well for dust gathering when sanding on the lathe as well as collecting chippings off the router table ... and is excellent for clearing up chippings, shavings, dust etc as a vaccum cleaner.

It still works well for these purposes ... but ...

... it's started blowing really hard at the exit port in the lid ... the white plastic cover just gets blown off, and if I put a hose on it snakes all over the floor, there's that much pressure coming through.

It never used to do this. I have changed the paper and the canvas bag filters, emptied it out, etc ... can't see anything broken, holed, etc.

Anyone got any ideas ... both why, and is it significant (for instance is it about to break)?

Are you sure the hose isn't blocked? Have you checked with a long, thin offcut or something to see that there isn't an obstruction somewhere?

That's what it sounds like, to me. It's a bit like when you cover the end of the hose with a wide offcut and that exhausted air needs to escape somewhere.

Been over it very carefully. It is sucking just fine - all the hoses etc clear - and just cleaned up a lot of shavings and dust just fine from an afternoon in the workshop making stool legs on the lathe. It's the outflow - seems stronger than before. I gaffer-taped the outlet cap down and it still blew it off after 10 minutes or so.

Maybe the tight-fit of the cap has just come loose (vibration wear?) so it no longer stays in place, and it's always blown that hard but I didn't notice ...

I've got one of the larger Camvac machines and all three caps blow of so often I've lost them. I don't think you have a problem. Apparently the machine is much quieter if you attach hoses to these ports and run them outside and into your neighbors living room.

I took the caps off mine, as its under the outfeed table, so no risk of anything falling down the outlet. I am sure its quieter without the caps so you're probably better off.

Anyway, I'm probably being dense here but why would it blow more if there was a blockage. If there was, and its sucking in less, surely there would be less exhaust air, not more?

That's what I thought too, but I was too knackered to think it through properly, so just took it that the previous posters were right, and I was just thick.

Ha, I may not be as thick as I thought I was, or am I??

Mmm, time for bed I think.

Cheers

OK ... feeling much better about this now ... maybe it's luck or coincidence the cap has stayed on this long ... a long hose to my neighbours living room can't be that expensive ... !

Thanks everyone!
