Sorry..bad grammar again. What I meant to say was that that will prove the Mac connection still works with Nationwide and the Tiger/safari configuration.

Out of curiosity are we talking setting up these network settings on ubuntu or on the Mac OS?

Just too a quick peak at the Sagem aka Alice router spec and it's horrendously well(over?)-featured.

pick your poison ???

either would prove the same thing
i suspect graphically in 10.5 would be easiest, but then again I don't shy away from the terminal

Andy, I`d go for it in osx

Sorry, I've not responded sooner, i fiddled a bit and lost the internet connection all together. ISP has put me right.

Next I have a confession ref the windows laptop. We have just realised the Nationwide page only works when the laptop is connected to the web via the VPN to the wife's company. When the laptop connects directly via the ISP the problem is as per the Mac.

Does this confirm the problem has to be with the a) ISP or b) Router or both?

Aaaaarrrrggggghhhh! ;)

I think it certainly points that way mate. Still doesn't explain why it worked on the Mac before the updates, or could you be mistooken about that? That's a serious Q btw, not taking the pi$$.

Certainly gives us somewhere to look. Do you have access to another router you could borrow to test?

oh *grinz*

not completely back to the drawing board but makes the problem a bit more "open loop" i.e. you may never get it to work with this router....

I'd go for disabling all of the router features, I'd try to get the ISP involved because as far as I'm concerned this falls into the category of not being able to do "basic web browsing".

sounds to me like theres nothing wrong with the MAC or laptop at all, ubuntu OSX or windows. I'd be prepare to stick my neck on the line and say its a router/ISP problem for sure.

I'd suspect firewall problems on the HTTPS port, VPN would be punching a hole through and bypassing the issue.

Steve

Mark,
is there a log I could check to see when Safari was last updated I could then compare that against my Nationwide statements to see when I last made a transfer.
I have not got another router but I hope soon take the mac elsewhere to check it out on a friends internet connection.

Steve,
Missus has spent half an hour on the phone trying to convince the ISP that if it works fine via the VPN but not via the router then it's the router/ISPs problem. They seem convinced the problem is with the Nationwide!!!
French helpdesks as as good as the UK ones ie if she can get a native french speaker it is far easier then with those with certain ethnic accents.
Would you mind if I sent you screen grabs of all the router settings as the fiddle I had earlier on the mac caused me to grey earlier.

We will try again with the ISP tomorrow night.

thanks

Andy

Agree with the first paragraph for sure. Second one is a bit less certain, VPN part is defo correct but it's not for sure that it's the router, could also easily be the way the ISP handles certain connections/sites. didn't he say that some SSL sites work okay?

do you know what the router model number is, take a squizz underneath, a UK manual would be a start, then you can convert to the french screens or try to switch the language to english. First off would be to disable any firewalls................... prime suspect get it to pass all TCP and UDP ports

Steve

Steve,
It's a Sagem F@st 3302. Sagem's website does not have the manual and I am struggling to find one elsewhere, strangely they have a user guide in the french website but not the english. The screen grabs and options though bear no resemblance to what I can see here.

Mark,
yess some sssl sites do work, ie Natwest Online banking .

Sorry Andy I know next to nothing about Mac's, maybe Steve or Roger can tell you this.

On the router side, if you look on the web is there and english version of your router? If so, maybe with screen shots of your settings we can work out what is set on it...

Roger,
I do not seem to have a console install log on the clone I made of Tiger etc before I installed Leopard.

Sagem's own english website does not have a manual, their website has but the screen shots bear no resemblance to what mine looks like. I could email you a zip fil of all the screen shots of mine if you think it might help.

I'm not sure where the logs are stored as console goes and finds them. I don't have a copy of Tiger and so can't help. All i can suggest is that you troll through the folders.

This might help

OK going back to Mark's earlier question I found the update log and Safari4 was installed 28 June 2009 at 14.31 hrs.
Unfortunately searching historical statements is one of the areas I cannot access on the nationwide site, I only see current month. We do not receive paper copies of the online current account.
When I get the laptop back this evening I'll have a look.- Still think that this is a red herring now though.

Sorry Mark.

Yep, if you send me the screenshts of each of the menu's, sequentially so I know where each submenu belongs, I will be able to tell you what is set and anything I think you should change.

I'll caveat that by saying I will do this providing babelfish can translate it well enough for me... ;)
