Steve,
thanks for the offer but postage would be prohibitive. Also the telephone goes via the router too all supplied by the ISP (Alice). I do not think I would get any support from the ISP if I changed the modem to a model not supplied by them. I also have the added problem of all the technical stuff on the modem is of course in French.

The missus is very nervous about the ubunto option on her company's laptop so I think the easiest safest option is to try the mac elsewhere first and or try and persuade the IPS to give me a new modem.

Cheers

I'll give that justgivingsite a go later on using my G4 and let you know how it goes.

So we're on the same page, what version of leopard and safari are you on?

Roger

Went to that site and made a small donation without any problem.

Same version of Leopard and safari as you. What version of Java are you on?

You could try deleting the safari plist file. Also IIRC safari is pretty good at recreating any files it needs and so you could temp rename the safari folder in library, application support, wherever and force safari to reload a clean set.

Roger, deleted history plist and bookmarks plist etc from library/safari. Renamed safari folder, reloaded imac - no change on NW nor justgiving. Just hangs.
Eventuall Justgiving comes back with a Safari can't open the page 'cos the server dropped the connection

have you checked that port 443 is specifically allowed on the osx firewall.
it obviously is on the router thus your wife's laptop works.............

Steve

Not that easy to do or check on OS X. But surely if 443 was blocked then Andy would fail when accessing any https site?

But one thought comes to mind is if port-forwarding is needed on the router ?

Steve/Roger

I've looked at the firewall in Sys Prefs and can';t see where or how to check port 443.
I'll have to work out the french for port forwarding and see what I can see on the router.

Meanwhile the bath is leaking.... must dash

Andy

With ref to the port forwarding on the router. I've found a section called "redirections de ports" - looks as if that could translate to port forwarding. What, if anything needs to be entered

Forget port redirection guys, this is for if you want to have something transmitting on a different port to normal, or on a specific source port.

Your router will do everything it needs to do as standard, all modern routers are 'stateful' so I think this is a red herring.

I'm in the same boat to be honest.

Putting on my work troubleshooting head on I would say the routing is absolutely fine because we have a laptop that works through it, and the issue came in when updates were taken on the Mac, so there's the issue. Regress the Mac back to where it worked then try individual updates until you find what breaks it (if that's how mac updates work, I am a mac virgin...)

Bearing in mind the issue you had with your router the other day that makes me a little wary of this but then again I have never heard of that issue you experienced before so could have been hardware.

It's a puzzler to be sure...

Mark,
thanks. I am really grateful for the help I am getting with this. Having just had a Skype chat with Roger and from the opinions of Steve and yourself I think I will HAVE to do an erase and install of Tiger which will bring back Safari 3 and see what happens.
This evening we will also try and persuade the ISP to replace the modem on the basis that I have tried the Mac elsewhere and it works. (I haven't yet of course but they won't know that)

Having got a wee bit of plumbing to do tomorrow (waste is leaking under the bath) I will not be able to install Tiger until Thursday.

Rest assured I will update the thread or start an Eureka! one.

Cheers

OK, here's the latest.

UbuntuLiveCD loaded on Mac, situation with the 2 known problem sites persist, Natonwide and Just Giving. Nat West works fine.

Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox for Ubuntu 3.0.8 canical 1.0

I guess this proves the problem is ISP/Router related but is not specific to all Https sites.

bright Ides welcomed.

Did not manage to speak to the ISP ref a new Router last night, missuswas late home then insisted on watching Emma and fell asleep before the end - that's a working woman for you!!
Bless her.

Andy

Just to clarify, what this actually proves is a conflict between your Mac and ISP or router or both, not that you have a specific ISP/router issue!

As you say, your wifes lappy works fine, therefore the problem is with your Mac interfacing with the router/ISP!

I hate to keep harping back, but if this worked okay before you updated your software then surely this points to issues with the software and its compatibility with other devices???
