I realised how close Christmas is today which means that I should really build that dining table that we are going to need.

I don't have a van yet so I'm going to have to get the timber delivered. I'm thinking of going with sapele. I already have the legs in beech and want a bit of a contrast without painting or staining. Walnut was the first choice but it might run a bit expensive.

The table will be approximately 36" x 72".
So where is the most reasonable online retailer? I'm not too up to date on timber prices so I'm never sure if I'm being overcharged. I'm in the North West but I don't think that will have much bearing on delivery charges. Most give scalar rate or offer free postage over a certain amount.

I don't like the sound of Beech legs and a Sapele top, might look like a bit of a mismatched lash up, but you're the one who has to live with it so yours is the only opinion that counts!

SL Hardwoods will deliver either Sapele or Beech to you. They're not the cheapest, and you'll never get really outstanding boards by mail order, but they consistently provide slightly better than average quality at a reasonable price.

Good luck!

Anyone ordered from Avon Timber? They're popping up on Google now.

Perhaps I will go with beech after all due to the price.

I was thinking of getting sawn timber and preparing it myself but I'm not sure my hand planing skills are up to scratch. SL only seem to do PAR at 19mm which seems too thin for a large table. Might have to give them a call and see if they'll do thicker.

BearTricks, I've just ordered from Avon Timber, just some 44x32*2400 mm PAR lengths. Cost was about 70% of B&Q. I am collecting rather than having delivered as i live fairly close, though the delivery charge was not too bad. I'll let you know how I get on.

BearTricks, reporting as promised on AvonTimber. I ordered online and expected to get a call or email when it was ready, but this didn't come. I was ill for a few days so got back to them today. They didn't know why I didn't get a call, this would be normal, but they prepared the wood immediately and I collected it this afternoon. Only PAR whitewood but nice and straight. The reception man was very nice and helpful and showed me round their stocks. Whitewood/pine they stock in just about every size including PAR and edge-rounded construction timber. They always buy hardwoods in for PAR but overstock goes into their sawn hardwood bays, which are quite extensive: oak, ash, beech, tulipwood (poplar), sapele, walnut etc. See http://www.avon-timber-online-shop.co.u ... 6&pl1=1906 for the hardwood range. They store it in cold warehouses, and said the main problem with B&Q etc was that they store under clear plastic roofs in heated sheds, which gives uneven drying and warping. I was very impressed with the straightness and freedom from warp in their stock, whether hard or softwood, and the quality generally seemed good. So I can and will buy from them with confidence in future, though a phone call to check after an online order would be useful! I'd recommend them. They do deliver; for the small amount I bought and a 10 mile distance the cost would have been about £17, but you'd have to enquire about bigger options/distances.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like they care about what they're selling, which is good. I'll give them an email and see if they can get some beech to me.

I looked particularly at the beech and thought it was good. May I suggest that you give them a call rather than email? I think you might get a better result, as the guy there was very nice and helpful, and if you explain what you want he might do some selection for you. You can say that you were recommend by the chap who was there today and asked for a look round.
