buying something in the UK and paying for it, big rant

We (Oryx Design) love accepting bank transfers, instantly cleared and also pretty easy to match payment on the bank statement to my accounts - we don't accept credit cards as we have a low number of relatively high value transactions and the charges and time the credit card companies want to keep our money are both too high.

I also like to sometimes pay my bills this way too but when we buy from the Eurozone (rarely) the charges are off-putting (we have always paid these). I can understand why people don't want to take a credit card but also want to be able to pay with one myself (cheap credit and protection) - cake, fork, plate, yes please.

I have only ever had one customer who desperately wanted to pay on his credit card to gain the protection in case we went bust! I agreed a more graduated payment plan for him and we were all happy.

This problem with some UK suppliers may just be cultural and systematic - they don't have the systems set up to match volumes of payments into their accounts to their invoicing/order systems. They like to be in control of 'calling' the money and have a beep to let them know there is a problem if they take over the phone or the website not even let the order through without payment.
