I can find no markings on this plane except for a small letter “M” on the back end, where there is also what looks like a sheared off threaded component. The iron does not look like it is original. Please can anyone provide any information on a possible maker for the plane or what part(s) are broken off / missing?

I have just gone to check at the back of it and it does have a small letter M below the strike button, which I believe stands for 'malleable'. Mine also has a letter G.

Thanks Andy, a quick response indeed. I brushed the top and found exactly the same wording so a Slater it is. I have managed to shift the screw with a hammer and punch so I'll look for a nicer one to replace it with. I think I'll make a new iron - when you get a chance please could you let me have the measurements of your one? Also do you have any idea of the date of the plane?

Overall length is about 5" but would be 1/2" more if the iron was not so worn down. Thickness is 1/8".
The stem is 5/8" wide at the tip and is slightly tapered. This gives enough sideways movement to correct for errors in squareness and to have it protruding either to the right or left.
Breadth is 1 1/16" which is the same as the plane body. If it was any broader it might not fit through the slot; as it is, the side bevels are essential for letting it slip through.
I'm sure you could make something neat and tidy from an old plane iron or a bit of gauge plate - you have far more skills in that area than most of us!
