Yep........I'm sitting in it now!

.......and I've just designed yet another massive green-oak extension.....out to tender at the moment.

This isn't something to enter into without a bit of professional guidance though.....but can be an absolutely fantastic project.

No, you're not being cheeky.............and no, I haven't a clue!!!

Do you have a plot of land?

Mike
nope not yet, costing it up first, need to start saving

That's one of those Golden Rules, I'm afraid: find your land first then design your house!

Have a google around......there are loads of inspiring designs out there.

thanks, yer thats the plan find some land first, but i have always wanted to do this since i can remember, so im going to try my best to do it, after all you only live once. thanks again for your advice

i've not done it yet - but like you i'm thinking about it. "Home building and renovating" and "build it" magazines are both worth a look - the former also does handy colection books like "101 eco builds", "101 budget builds" etc

both magazines list plots for sale in the rear pages too

Well, best of luck with the search.........land is not easy to get hold of.

I'm always here for advice if you need it, and I love a good green-oak job!

Mike

PS Be extremely careful of terms like "eco-home, green building, low-energy house" etc............the magazines are full of utter nonsense on the subject. Greenwash is the word. Most claims for environmental credentials are completely spurious.

seriously if/ hopefully when i do it, i will give you a shout as u have had experince in this before, thanks again

agree with big soft moose - get those two magazines, read lots of articles and contact the oak frame suppliers for ideas. Also, the mags will point to some good shows to go to.

As for budget, the home building mag has a good guide, but allow £100-£200 per sq ft depending on how much you can do, your build route and final specification. This excludes land.
