Just taken delivery of a builders' skip. Piece of paper says 8yd which is what I ordered and paid for. Only...well, it looks a bit on the small side. I measured it up and worked out the volume in Sketchup....5.55 cu yd to the top. Googling a couple of sites suggests there are two sizes of builders skips - small and large. Mine looks to be just under the size rating for a small builders skip - ie 6 cu yd.

No-one there this afternoon but before I call on Monday, I just wondered if this was normal practice?

8yd ones usually have taller sides and they don't like you filling them with heavy waste.

Jason

At that height I would say you have a 6yd skip (when filled with a level load)

The last time I got a Skip it turned out to be an expensive waste of time. Almost everything I wanted to get rid of was on the 'Not Allowed to be put in Skip' list on the bottom of the delivery note.

No wonder people fly tip.

I 've got an account with a skip waste company and regularly hire 8 cube skips.
I've got one in my drive at the minute so I'll measure it up tomorrow (Sunday) and post the size.

I never have a problem with that. Builders' skips are intended to hold waste subsoil, bricks, concrete and whatever so are always very heavy.

I have two pieces of polystyrene packaging from the box in which I received my new PC I can't put the stuff the wheelie bin, and have to take ito the Council tip.
Now that for me is too far to walk or cycle. I could use the bus, but it' a two stage journey (Pollution) So I can use the car again pollution.
Or I can keep it in the house until I have saved up enough of the stuff to make a trip worthwhile. So I have to have the ruddy stuff hanging about.

What do we pay Councils for? And yes it is not surprising there is so much fly-tipping going on.

What they specifically say no polystyrene?
Or you dont want to break it up and put it into bags?

Just told us polystyrene was not to be placed in wheelie bins, but taken to the Council Tip. Same for my timber offcuts. Hence I have to store it all here until I have a pile of the stuff.

So my property will start to look like a tip.

Rubbish has to be in clear plastic bags. Or they won't take it.

BIOBIN

I shall break it up and mix it with the shredded paper, which they will take!

My council (N Norfolk) wont take the shredded paper from the shredder in the recycling bin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest, seeing all these finicky conditions here and in dw's thread, I'm surprised at the inconsistency between councils. Surprised no-one has challenged them with a judicial review.

That'll be because when you shred it, you've cut the fibres and made it unsuitable for recycling as paper if it gets mixed with the ordinary paper the whole lot is unrecyclable.

At one point the Local Council told my friends 85 yo Mother that she (and everyone else, obviously) would have to use Bin Liners with the Council Logo on, at £1 a go. That was on top of what people were already paying in Council Tax. They soon dropped that idea when many thousands said 'you can't do that, so, up yours'. Being elderly she was just going to comply until her daughter told her not to.
I've been told by letter from my Council that only rubbish left in the Council supplied wheelie bins would be collected. I wrote back and said I was fine with that and, 'when could I expect delivery of said wheelie bin?' Never got a reply. Still get my rubbish collected even though I'm using Bin Liners.
Have to add.. the Collectors, the people that actually do the work and get their hands dirty, are very good, no complaints there.

Not like the bin men around here then Studders theyre a right lot of lazy jobsworths
Ive somehow managed to end up with two bins of each colour and if the next door neighbours are away I put my spare bin outside of their house, but the lazy council x$%x check the bin and if its heavier than the neighbours usual load (they dont produce much rubbish) its left behind

Nope, mine take all bags that I put out, without opening them to see what's in them, as I've heard some do.

Meanwhile...... Skips

Meanwhile, back to Builders Skips :?

You going to fill it or tell them to stick it - i.e charging for an 8 yard one and appearing to deliver a 6 yard one?

Just overload it to buggery, if they moan insist you've only put 8cu yrds of rubbish in it.
