This seems like the best way, apart from the rubbery tyres, which my CB250 (identical to the Clarke, it looks like!) has, but I'd hope to live with that.

Does the speed now vary up to the original woodcutting speed & power, so it can be used for both?

How's the noise difference?

Just a word of warning. As I say I was gifted the motor, with an inbuilt reduction gearbox.
I then had to make a new output shaft for it so the end of the new one had the same size and configuration as the original motor shaft.
This involves machining a new shaft with two push fit diameters for the bearings, and an interference fit diameter for the gearwheel. The shaft end then needed a keyway machined into it, and the end tapped and threaded for the retaining bolt. This involves machining to very tight tolerances, so you wouldn't be able to do it without a lathe and micrometer etc.
The Kity or similar idea would be a much simpler DIY proposition as you would just need to find and fit suitable sized pulleys and a belt.

For anyone interested here are some pictures of my modified Clarke. The project boxes are way bigger than necessary, as I say very much thrown together with what I had lying around and these were what I had. The display shows the percentage of power going to the motor. The display and pot simply mounted into a piece of black acrylic to fit in place of the original switch.
Spacers behind the mounting points of the motor to get around the fact that the face of the until has reinforcing webs so it wouldn't lie flat on the back of the saw case.
