Hi all

Another query relating to connection speeds.

I have just moved the laptop downstairs, and the only way of getting a connection point for the broadband connection is via an extension cable. However, the connection speed has now dropped from about 3.5mbps to 800kbps. I assume this is because of the quality of the cable????

If so, can better quality cables be bought? Or should I just go for a wireless option?

Cheers

Karl

Karl,

By swapping to an extension cable, it's possible that you've increased the length of the ring wire, and you're therefore picking up more/different interference on that line. The good news is that you don't actually need the ring wire! So you can remove it and see if you get an improvement. Guide here:

I'd much rather use a CAT5\6 extension than a phone line extension. And relatively cheap as well - or if like me you have a drum of cable, and the crimping tool, takes all of 5 mins.

Me too, just put permanent CAT5 in, but I bet Karl has a USB ADSL modem or similar... It's getting increasingly difficult to argue the benefits of CAT5 to home users over just buying an ADSL router with WiFi.

I have both to be honest - almost complete coverage with wi-fi and wired CAT6. The wi-fi is good for surfing the web to be honest - anything more and unless your sat in the same room, it ain't happening. But then again ours is an old house with walls much thicker than a modern house - which might explain the degradation in the signal from upper corner to the opposite lower corner.

We use Tiscali at home now who provide a wireless router. My daughter's new MacBook couldn't initially pick up the signal. It was only after she tapped the appropriate icon  on the desktop was t'internet revealed, so she didn't even have to use one of those plug in adaptor thingies. My daughter is a very happy bunny with her new machine...and I still want one :x - Rob

Crisis over - I tried plugging the extension into a differnt socket, and lo and behold, connection speed back up to 3.8mbps.

You'll find virtually all laptop type computers now have a wireless adaptor included within the machine and will do the wifi thing.

If they understood the security implications it might be easier.

I put Cat5 throughout the house, and never used wifi for years. Even now I only use it for my G1 phone.
