Just got home from work to find the latest issue of British Woodworking.

Saw an article title on the front for "Frugal Woodworking", jokingly pointed it out to the wife: look, an article about me ;)

Then I noticed it was about buying at auction and I thought: I sent some pictures and notes to Nick about that auction at Pugh's, he must have been influenced by my name when he wrote the article. Let's have a look to see if he used any of my photos.

Not only has he used my photos, but he has also used my notes as the whole article!  Came as somewhat of a shock I can tell you. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I hope he has edited it, my spelling and grammar are usually terrible

Look ma, I got published. Made my day that has \:D/

Well done Frugal. Now what's your next article going to be about? ;)

Roger is in there too, welcome aboard guys!

I bet Chris's grandson is chuffed to bits about being on the front cover. What a steal on your school-mates, eh? :) Well-deserved, too, by the look of that table.

Well done, Frugal and Roger. :)

Apparently I'm in this one as well... Although, I haven't yet received my copy yet (my tutor got his at college yesterday). Has everyone else got theirs? Post seems to be a bit slow this week; I ordered a couple of cutters from Wealden on Tuesday (dispatched Wednesday) and I'm still waiting. As you probably know, they're usually next-day... :(

Fingers crossed for Monday then!

Olly, mine arrived yesterday - normally I receive mine the same day as posts start appearing on the forum, but this month it's been over a week later.

More importantly, when do you get paid?

Seeing the old bank balance increase is icing on the cake to writing articles

Well, given that I had no idea that I was contributing an article payment was never discussed :( . Nick asked for some notes from anyone attending the auction, I sent some notes and it looks like they were detailed enough to just fix my grammar and publish. The first I knew about it was when I opened the magazine.

I think Nick did say that he just wanted someone's views as opposed to a full written article.

It appears to me that at the end of the day, you have written a piece for Nick's magazine which he then sold (apparently using your pictures and words) to make money for his business and himself, but you get paid nothing for your efforts as a freelance contributor.

Of course, I have not seen the magazine and may have got the wrong end of the stick.

Frugal
You could have Nick nicked for nicking your article , it's called plaigirarism . Worth a free copy for life I would say and he's getting off light at that . If my current copy ain't here with tomorrow's post we'll have to send the boys round to sort him out .
Cheers !

I think some of you guys are jumping the gun a bit...

I've had several articles (small and large) published and, although I've never previously discussed a fee with Nick, a cheque usually drops through my door within days of the magazine's release. I'm sure it's the same for the other contributors as well. Nick's a good bloke!

If you really are concerned, I sugggest you drop him an e-mail. He's a very busy guy running two magazines, he may not have had a chance to sort things yet. :)

How do you know?

This thread seems to be going down a path not intended by the original poster?

I submitted my tiny piece as a "tip" and certainly do not expect any payment.

Frugal has not complained about monies - it has been suggested by others.
If Frugal is concerned then it is between him and Nick and nothing to do with anybody else?

Rod

I agree with Rod and Olly, it's a private matter to be taken off-line and Nick is a straightforward bloke and good to deal with, give him a chance before people start jumping on him !

This edition of the mag' must be the best yet, found loads of interesting stuff to read and still haven't finished it properly yet.

Cheers, Paul :D

No need to fret lads .I'm sure it's so much tic and having a bit of a laff , no harm intended . Cheers !

I think that this thread is getting a bit off-topic. Let me make it perfectly clear: Nick never made any suggestion that any notes or photos would be paid for. I never made any demand on Nick that I be paid for them. I never made any suggestions that I was expecting to get paid.

I sent a set of notes in stream of conciousness format because that was the only way that I could see to set the scene for someone who had not been present to enable them to write an article. I set no expectations on Nick that I was writing article rather than simply giving him what he kindly asked for in order to write his article.

I am incredibly flattered that Nick thought what I had produced was good enough to be published.
