Well I did manage to get one present finished. Oddly this was a last minute idea that I was doing at the end of each day in the workshop. The last day I was in the workshop I'd sanded it.

I was mobile enough last night to apply a couple of coats of Paraffin Oil.

It turned out smaller than I'd hoped, about 200mm x 380mm so it's turned out to be more of a bread board than a chopping board. It's going to a professional chef so I hope he likes it ;)

I'm going to complete the other presents in the new year (hopefully)

What timbers have you used? It looks like ABW and beech? :ho2

I wonder how many other woody's families are going to be receiving breadboards for Christmas?!!!

Yes quite a coincidence, Mike. Not that this is a mutual admiration society, but I think yours are much nicer. These turned out thinner and smaller than I planned. I didn't much much thought into the stock sizes as I was going.

The wood is Beech and Iroko. All offcuts.

Paraffin Oil was recommended on this here forum. I didn't go the thinned varnish route as I didn't want to be standing for longer than I had to.
 
Nice Tom, seen Mikes as well both nice work, and sure who ever has them they will be used well. Just taking some pics of what I have made for my mun to open.
 
Liquid paraffin is fine for bowls and boards for food contact I believe, gives a nice matt finish and doesn't go rancid and sticky like some natural oils.

Called mineral oil across the pond I think......

Nooooo, mineral oil is not paraffin, however both will make you bloody regular if you injest them!

Phil I have so many 'tuits' from this site it's unreal. The thing is, everything posted here is custom, from our own heads and that's what makes it all desirable.

Mike - liquid paraffin is the preferred finish for food related articles. Vaseline used to be a favourite of Alan Peters but isn't recommended any more as the stuff never actually hardens - Rob
