Brass Screws

You wouldn't think that there's a problem obtaining small brass screws, but there is.

I'm trying to locate supplies, in small quantities admitedly, of miniature brass screws in lengths varying up to about 5/8", in 0, 1, 2, and 3 gauge heads.
I build and repair the occasional drop-dial clock case and they are used to hold the dials and other small parts in place.

Does anyone know of sellers?

The usual on-line model parts suppliers only provide a very limited selection and the sellers of normal-sized screws don't do them at all.

I had a conversation with someone who restores old barometers and he used to use a specialist outfit who supplied all the bits and bobs needed. Sorry no links but might be a different search direction to lead google on.

I saw a wide range of tiny brass screws in old boxes on a shelf near the counter of an antique shop in the Cotwolds. When I commented on this being unusual, the extremely grumpy owner said - oh, I only sell those "to trade", I suppose I ought to put a sign up.

I ordered very small brass screws from Ryders of Bury (screwsonline) last year and was very happy with the quality and price. Admittedly you have to by a box of 100 or 200 but they don't rust! And at their prices neither do they break the bank.

Ah yes, Screwsline......I have seen those already. The web site is just a front page. Only possible to order by e mail or call first for a price.

They don't answer either phone or e mail..... most unprofessional.

These tiny screws are really difficult to get.

I enquired a while back- they were in the process of closing down I think. Maybe they have done so and not updated the website.

When I cleared out my grandfathers garage I found a box of the smallest woodscrews I have ever seen, they are about 1/4 long and you need better eyes than mine to use them! If you want me to bung a handful into an envelope PM me your postal address and I'll send some. I have had them for 20 odd years and not found a use for them yet.

I was under the impression that Ryders had been bought by another company and not that they were closing down. It did take a few phone calls to get them to eventually get me a price for postage and send me the screws. Which I did not experience as uncooperative but more as realistic. If they are not really set up to sell small quantities (a dozen boxes of screws). But Ryders were the most cooperative of all the small screw suppliers. Perhaps they are closed for the summer holidays. Ryders charged me about 8 quid for postage which was what it cost to post.
Another company (that shall remain nameless) in the south of England I contacted wanted 30 quid for posting me a very small order of tiny screws and told me to go elsewhere if I thought that was excessive...which I did. They would only send them 'signed for' outside the UK apparently they had been scre.. cheated by people outside the UK in the past. Funny how woodworking can end up feeling like a scavenger hunt sometimes.
