Hi folks,

I need to re-handle a couple of chisels, (Supplied with boxwood handles. ) I'm not too worried about the price as long as it isn't a blatant rip off!

So would anyone who knows of a decent supplier please step forward?

Thanks in anticipation.

John :D

I found some on FleaBay once...then the supplier went away...I guess the stock ran out...

Let me know if you find one John...I wouldn't mind a regular supply in the near future.

Obliged Jim...

I have enough 2 x 2 Ash to make handles from just in case!

I was thinking about the London pattern that ALF likes so much.
But time is a problem!

There is normally someone at Westonbirt Aug B/H wood festival that sells boxwood. It tends to be in branch / log form so I am not sure if it is green or dry.

Perhpas the organisers could give you a list of last year's companies who attended as a start?

Thanks Simon.

Lovely place is Westonbirt.

Nothing is urgent about this. Just going through my 'tuit' list really. So I'll keep that in mind. Green timber might well turn easier anyhow.

(Such a basic question from one whose Grandfather was a Master Turner! )

Disgraceful ain't I!

Thanks again Simon

Hi John

Box is traditional for handles but it doesn't have to be:

a couple of Alf's octagonal London pattern handles in English Walnut, but any decent timber than can be turned well will do the job - Rob

All the boxwood I've seen - and occasionally bought - has been in branch/log form. I assume as it never gets exactly big, that's just how it comes. All my supplier info is out of date unfortunately, but anyway, there's more to chisel handles than just boxwood as Rob rightly points out.

Contrary to what this pic may indicate, I actually like a wide range of chisel handle styles. I won't go so far as to say I've never met one I didn't like, but it is true that it's often quite difficult to get me to let go of one once I have it in my hand...

Lovely Alf and very well turned/crafted. I like the idea of multi-coloured handles. 8)

That is just showboating!

yes.. and from the 'sundeck' too!
Nice work ALF.
Mind you I only have a couple to make... So I might go out and cut me some wild Blackthorn! By the time I get a 'roundtuit', it will be just right!

Hmm.

For that to be true, one can deduce that the 14 exhibited london pattern handles are not a dominant proportion of the chisels you own.

This means ... you've got a lot of chisels!

But I think we knew that :)

Yandles sell boxwood but it is not consistent quality, the last prices I bought split badly,
The Ray Iles handles could be an idea as the price from Yandles for boxwood in the size to make a handle was about £5,

Damn! Rumbled by your analytical approach. #-o  I may have a teeny tiny little chisel problem, but nothing I can't - wait for it - handle. Boom boom.

I'll get me coat...
