Friends travelling in Rajasthan sent me this picture. Apparently the craftsman is cutting marble with this saw which has a simple wire for a blade. He applies some sort of abrasive to the wire to cut the marble with it.

I seem to remember seeing sand being used as an abrasive in a demonstration of how the ancient civilisations cut hard stone.

Aragorn, I think his beard is dyed with henna (thinks - must remember that for next time I buy mahogany!)

Tony, well yes but this guy is obviously a Galoot - just look at his vice. His lack of bench suggests he follows the Japanese tradition (but I can't see his chisels..)
