Bowl for Critique - and Wood ID ?

Hi Guys,

Last nights effort. I have no idea what the wood is though, but got huge streamers from the gouge !

What looks like tearout on pic one is actually speckles in the grain.

Great wee bowl, and love the burn lines. !

I may be way off on the I.D. ... the 'real knowledge' will be along and give you the 'definitive answer' I'm sure !

ID - Can't see any grain so my GUESS would be Sycamore or equally likely Birch. Seen both woods with that sort of mottled marking. (Got some in the workshop. 8) )

Take your word that's not torn grain. :-$ :lol: :lol:

Iv'e never used sycamore, but it is quite like a birch vase i did a while back, but seems more solid than the birch i last turned ( last birch was a little fluffy if you knwo what i mean )

Honest to god, i wouldn't put a finish on anything if it was torn !!!

Doesn't Sycamore have that sort of pattern in it's grain :?: That's if it's not tear out :wink: Though it isn't showing on the inside. :?

Its my pics !!!

The finish is just abranet 180 and 240 - then sanding sealer, cut back with 240 and then more sanding sealer, then burnished with its own shavings.

The outside is just as shiney/glossy as the inside, Must be the position i took the photo ( next to kitchen window - this am, no atificial light/no flash.

looks great. love the pattern on the wood. Not well up on wood type's, doesn't help when your a telecoms engineer and not a carpenter/cabinetmaker. Where do you get your wood supply from :?:

Classic shape loz, and just enough trimming to break up the bland outer curve, must say I prefer the cleaner grain figuring on the inside rather than the external speckles, might be a different matter in the flesh though.

Hi Loz,

Another vote for (slightly ropey) Sycamore.

Certainly nothing wrong with the shape and the burn lines are well positioned (very easy to make them look a bit random!! :evil: )

Not sure abot the finish on the outside? In the photo it appears a bit torn and "punky", the inside finish looks good though,

I like the bowl, the lines on the side look very nice and well positioned.
Sycamore has a certian smell when you work it, run an off cut through the band saw and see what the smell reminds you of.

Hi,

The burn lines, - just went in a mil with a skew tipped left then right ( v cut ) and then applied some wire till it smoked ! ( stripped old lawnmower mains cable ) .

Egg suck time -

Dont wrap wire round your fingers ! - add some dowel toggles to the ends, then just told in fingertips. The heat transfer down the wire is rapid so the dowel saves searing your fingerprints off, and saves you losing digets when the wire snags !

Love the simple shape of this. I suspect the photos aren't doing it justice. The burn lines are just enough to enhance without detracting.
