I've not done much lately as I'm building the new workshop, but I've really enjoyed restoring some Stanley planes (and the odd record one). Are there any particularly well thought of book or sites for identifying the planes?

I know I know, verging on obsessive collector territory :D

For books on Stanley, John Walter has written the most obsessively complete reference book. It's been out of print for a while and the few copies offered for sale have sky high asking prices.
However, it says here that a new edition is nearly ready

Just a reminder if needed that English-made Stanley's don't follow the dating markers for those made in the US. Even assuming you have a plane that's all original, with no swapped-in parts over its life, it's often not possible to accurately type/date it.
