Bookends?

Been asked about making a pair of bookends, just wondered if it is really as simple as making an 'L' shaped support for the chosen figure, or do they need to be weighted? Should the supports be mitre jointed, rebate or butt joints?

i did some very simple ones, which I domino'd together in an L shape. I used a rebate, because I thought it looked better than a butt joint, but it isn't essential. I based them on these, which are dovetailed, http://barnsley-furniture.co.uk/smaller/bookends.

I'd use a box joint though dovetails would hold the right angle better in the event of the glue failing.
