Here's a question....

Bog Oak..... how can you tell it's actually 'bog-oak' and not just a bit of old oak that some fiendish entrepreneur has just dipped/soaked in black stain for a period of time and is trying to make a fast buck...??

Nick

Bog oak isn't often oak, just a term used for any wood that has been lying in a peat bog for thousands of years. Doctored oak will still smell likeoak, have all the grain of oak etc.

If you've seen the real thing i can't see how you could mistake it easily.

Unless there's some fiendish way to fake it, but i can't see how.....

Well you could take some oak planks and leave them in a bog for a couple of thousand years......

Doent work like that - you need a turf cutter to spill guiness on them once a year...............

If it is hard, brittle, difficult to turn, sheds black dust everywhere and splits readily along the grain pattern in the most inconvenient places when exposed to air, won't glue with CA unless using an activator then it's probably bog oak.

Sounds idea stuff :) A farming friend digs a good amount up each year; hopefully I will pick up some that hasn't dried to firewood at some point and let you know how I get on with it.

i'll let you know how i get on then.....

just bought a few pen blanks off of the 'bay from an Irish seller. when they arrived i looked at them and thought "how can you tell...."

anyway i'll give it a go, and hope to get covered in dust rather than shavings....
