Have been given a dozen blanks, 4in square, 12 inches long, mostly elm and yew. No shakes or splits. Have been dry stored for over 30 years. Are they of any use to a very amateur turner?
 
Yes sounds like some gorgepus wood, be careful with the yew, it's a very toxic material so make sure you wear a face mask and have dust collection on.
Some pics would be nice 😉
 
Given them, you lucky pipper, they sound fine. Just gentle cuts and sharp tools.

Judging by the response to this thread you shiuld be stuck right in to them by now lucky sod green streak 5 miles wide happy turning and look forward to the photos on last thing you turned
