Blanket Box

Hi all

I would like to build a blanket box about 4' x 2' with dovetail joints made out of light oak, but I am not sure of what thickness of wood should I use,
any suggestions would be appreciated

i would use 1" sawn, which will finish at about 3/4" give or take. If it looks a bit thick, plane a little more off. It wont be far off though.

Defo no thicker than an inch, I made a toy box thats roughly 36x18x24 out of pine/softwood - finished thickness of the panels is 35mm. Takes two people to safely move it :shock:

I agree with the above, if it is for blankets then 3/4" will stack up fine with dovetails. You could go for 7/8" but the added time taken for each tail and pin does add up when sawing all those dovetails.

yep, 3/4"wil do or in new money - 18mm.

I'm halfway through doing one for my son at the mo.

It is quite large being 130cm long, 50cm wide and 53cm high, the thickness of the timber (oak) is 20mm, the panels are 9mm oak faced ply.

If you have not yet started your project one thing you may want to consider is making some part of it in a scented timber. If for instance you make the base out of red cedar you will not only have a box that will smell good it will ensure you have no problems with moths or woodworm.
