I was over at Paul Chapmans a couple of days ago and we were playing around with his Veritas No80 Scraper on this CHT page which worked very well. I notice though that the bigger scraper plane on the same page is available with and additional A2 steel blade and wondered if this is worth having in a scraper as I like A2 steel in plane blades. Carbon steel as standard or the A2? - Rob

I like a 2.4 mm, A2 blade which Thomas ground specially for me, for the usual reasons of somewhat longer use.

I also use Hock 2.4 mm high carbon blades which are excellent.

I think it would depend on how comfortable you are with grinding and honing A2.

David - thanks for that. Another question though and that is will the wider blade at almost 75mm (I think) fit into an Eclipse clone honing gauge or is the bevel best ground on the Tormek? - Rob

Rob,

The 112 Stanley & L-N width does fit the clone.

Unfortunately when I wrote the article for my second book, I had not realised that the clone was wider than my 1970's Eclipse. Hence all the faffing with wooden wedges..............doh.......
