Hello,

I'm looking for an 8 sided bird's mouth router bit, 8mm shank, if not possible a 1/4 inch shank will work too. Could anyone point me in the right direction ?

Thanks, i know about mlcs, leevaley, infinity, whiteside, amana, bladesnbits, eagleamerica and pricecutter's, ebay offer. There might be some more out there, but so far i've only found 1/2 inch shank bits. If they exist in Europe they might be made in an 8 mm shank version, which i'm looking for.

Am using the TS at the moment, making native american drums. Looking for a way to make things easier so i can maybe organise a class for woodworking analaphabets (for example grandmothers and mother's in law  ) and the router table/bird's mouth might be the easiest way to go.

I have a hand mitre saw, that would mean some touching up with a plane and shooting board (to play it safe), but that might be to much, as most will only be interested in the drum, not so much in the woodworking aspect i think.

I could prepare everything, i my mind that would take much of the making something from 'scrap' with your hands out of it.

You might be able to cut the birds mouth profile in the edges of your drum staves on a router table fitted with a straight cutter. You'd need to make an auxiliary table that can be tilted to present your workpiece at an angle (say 45 degrees) to the top edge of the cutter. It would need a bit of experimentation to get a suitable bed angle and bit height for the effect you want but it should be do-able. You would also need a fence that can be closed up tight to the bit of have a Google for zero clearance fence inserts. I hope my description makes sense...sorry I don't have a picture as that would make it more obvious.

Thx George for the tip, makes perfect sense. I did think about this and seeing as there don't seem to be 8mm or 1/4 shank bird's mouth bits out there it might be the only way to go if i would want to use my current router (metabo of e 1229).
