I'm looking for a mere 3 or 4 'sticks' of Birch, 1"x 1"x 12", plain, straight grained and knot free. Can anyone help me out or provide the contact of someone who could supply me. I've drawn a blank on my usual suppliers and the woodturning places tend to go for the figured/spalted type - not what I need for my requirements.

hi mignal
cant help you out with the birch, but i just visited your site and spent a short time thoroughly enjoying myself with your Linuxplane venture. I also like the look of your avatar, is that scrollwork, if so where did you get the pattern from?

It's a lute rose that is pierced and cut with a knife. A fretsaw isn't really suitable for producing something like that - at least not in Spruce. The 'pattern' is an historic design that goes way back to something like 1590.
Here's a guy that has taken them out of the context of a lute and uses them for decorative boxes:

PS. He's pretty good.

And as someone who develops on Linux/Unix platforms, am intrigued about the title

I had to call it something! It was just following in the Linux tradition of free or open source i.e. free info. It also has the benefit of perplexing everyone, especially our Finnish friends. :?

Hello there, first post here.

I bought back quite a load of birch from Finland a few years back.
I love Birch, lovely timber- never understood why its not more readily available in the uk.
Anyway the Birch was kiln dried and bought from a timber mill. I made a bed and a few other bits of furniture. I know I still have a few bits and pieces left. Trouble is they have been in a cold damp garage for the last few years.
I will look and see how clean and straight it is, if it,s any good you are welcome to it.
Otherwise I will be in Finland in the summer, and could send as much as you need.

The last few times I've visited Lanarkshire Hardwoods they've had some small pieces of birch, nothing much more than 3 feet long and in sections of up to about 3 by 6. It's a long way from you and they don't do mail order, but as you will only need some small bits it might be worth having a word with them.

Cheers,

Dod
