Take a careful look at the other thread where the pros and cons of exhausting rather than recycling through high efficiency filters were discussed in detail.

How do I find this thread?

P.S.

Dunno about getting an instrument to check airspeed. Think I'd be happy to get an extractor that gives far more CFM than needed and assume I get the 800 cfm at the woodworking machine. Will go for 6" ducting and only buy stationary machines with 5 or 6" ports. I'll also make sure I dont have long duct runs and shart bends.

Not sure who said above but may be my thread: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/outs ... 40846.html

Thanks for putting that up Matt, i've been away. That's one where some of the pros and cons of exhausting outside came up.

The other (i think! ) i was thinking of turns out to have been in response to your own question Andrew: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/my-d ... 41415.html My head is like a turnip these days, too much reading - no short tern memory...

Those two i think probably covered quite a few of the issues arising if you exhaust outside. A search for 'Pentz' should bring up the few more threads around dust collection - more in the context of what his approach is about.

It in the end comes down to judgement calls and so on given the variability of conditions and requirements that may arise.

The suggestion to buy some shared measuring kit was just a floater - but it's probably the one way of grounding all of this stuff in some hard data. e.g. test your shop with a particle counter and find out if your current filtration works, and if Bill Pentz' data stands up. Ditto test duct velocity.

Three potential problems at least might arise: (1) it'd entail coughing up some money, (2) the kit could well go missing on its second visit wherever, and never be seen again and (3) it'd take some admin to stay on top of.

Hmmm, admin. More admin. Bit of a turn off for sure. Personally I wouldn't be too bothered about the air velocity gadget. However I do think there is some merit in the partical counter.

The key to all this is if there is actually something to be feared in our work shops.
Are we taking our lives in our hands every time we want to cut some wood?
Is there a super fine partical in the air that is knocking weaks or months off our lives everytime we partake in a hobby/profession?
Should we be terrified for our kids in these workshops when all we want to do is pass on some very useful skills.

Or is it all just horse s£!t?

Worth thinking about none the less.

Eoin
