Belt & Disc Sanders - (Bought a Draper - Dust a problem)

I've had the Clarke version of that one for many years, does what it's supposed to but concur with the other comments that dust is not well contained. The disc table is a bit flimsy too but you can work around that.

I have the clarke, and found the belt gets seldom used as the joins in the material cause it to bump, like when driving over a bridge.

How did you work around the flimsy table? just don't press down too hard? or some sort of shop built table?

Just made a packer between the underside of the table and the bench for it in the 90 degree position - I've never used it for compound mitres

The Draper arived this afternoon and I have just finished putting on the bits and testing it out. Seems a very sturdy machine, nice and heavy, so stays where it's put and I have not screwed or clamped it just yet. Simply set it up on one of my workmates.

It seems to do the job well, but the dust goes everywhere and what is called the dust extraction duct and deflector does little, only gets a bit of the dust, so a heavy sanding session will certainly need a good mask.

Will have to work on the extraction/dust collection part. What do others use when using one of these machines? Any 'Heath Robinson' type suggestions that work for you? I would appreciate any help on this.

you have extraction hooked up right?

I found with the clarke, that on the belt 90%+ is sucked away as the belt carries the dust around into the extraction part.

on the disc it's not quite as good but I certainly don't have a lot of dust in the air.

The draper looks to be very similar.

I have the Draper version and I agree with wcndave. With extractor running there very little dust in the air, the belt extraction is particularly good.

I am very naughty and must admit that I have been managing with a little 'Henry' and do not have the correct connection for the sander. Also |I really ought to get some more filtration. What do you you guys have in place please? The filtering is such a vast area and there seems to be a very wide variety of dust extractors, some at (what I call) silly prices for a hobby shop. However, I know I need to do something, or buy a couple of deep sea diving suits.

Any "shop vac" would work for that sander, for sanding you probably want one with a hepa filter bag and a filter cartridge inside as the dust is very fine.

Then as you find the dust bags expensive you might build a fein or cyclone separator and you enter a whole new world....

As long as you have the filtration, and the right adaptor (I got mine from Rutlands) you should be ok though with almost anything wood shop worthy.

I must look into this as a priority now because we need the sander for the boxes we are both making and I agree that a Hepha filter would be best.

Already have a 'Henry' that is swaped about, but really only have the bandsaw and sander as machines and quite happy to move hoses as required. It's only in our gagage.

For a sander something like this http://www.axminster.co.uk/numatic-xp-2 ... ckage-deal which is cheap would work. It doesn't have the second level of filtration but would suffice. It also jas auto take off which means you'll actually use it, and will be forced to.

A bandsaw produces mostly dust,, so with the right adaptor you could hook this up too. However BS are notoriously bad for dust mgmt so you might consider something a little bigger.

Anything under the vaccum extractors section on axminster would do it, the cheapest http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-rd ... ckage-deal has two stage filtration, although not a bag system, so you'd have to empty into something outside. Perhaps hepa bags can be added anyway.

The next step up might be this http://www.axminster.co.uk/numatic-nv75 ... -extractor again no auto take off, but quiet with bags and two stage filtration.

I am using the NILFISK AERO 26-21 PC 1250W 25LTR WET & DRY VACUUM CLEANER 240V Works great on all my kit with small adaption methods on some.Even the bag can be used more than once with a cut at the corner. Then fold over and clamp for next use.
See how it works on the Draper 50021 Alex mine should be here in a couple of days.
