BAsic tools

When i did my first Carpentry day yesterday my tutor showed me the basic tools.He also show me three tools you use for making a good line or cut.
One was the knife and thee was to other motor gauge or something like that and another one.
Anyway why is there three different tools for just making a straight line for using the chisel to chisel into the wood?
