Hi,
I took some garden waste to our local tip/recycling yard today and while i was there a local farmer arrived complete with tractor/trailer and started unloading some junk (while cursing every other breath lol) I couldn't help spotting some wooden items so strolled over for a better look. He said "Help yourself if ya want any of it" so i did :D here's what i found.
1x 5ft solid teak coffee table complete with solid teak lower shelf and *** burns.
2 x dark wood bedside cabinets (not sure what wood yet but at a guess i'd say mahogany)
1 x 30" oak oval mirror frame
24x solid very heavy brass door knobs at around 2" diameter that will polish up lovely
and last but not least a 6ft x 4" x 1" lump of oak (from a mantlepiece according to the farmer)
Not bad result?
Apparently they are downsizing from their large old farmhouse to a modern bungalow on their land and their son is moving into the farmhouse, I guess that's reason he was in a bad mood lol)
Its amazing how a boring trip to the tip can change into a great day out.
Cheers
Brian

excellent you are lucky the recycling Gestapo didn't jump on you and stop you having it they charge at ours and look dimly on people swapping their junk, well done on the bits.

That was lucky, It quite amazes me the useful stuff people throw out, I just hate seeing timber thrown away in skips and such like but as TheDax points out the council Gestapo will often do their up most to be awkward and do their very best to stop anyone having something that is going to be dumped anyway, a favourite reason they use is health and safety!

I always feel it would be much more sensible if they made recycling depts sort of clearing houses where people could bring their rubbish and others could sort out and take what they want, one mans junk is another's joy!

Of course one of the reasons they don't want people to reuse and recycle stuff is because unlike pre the 1980's our whole economy depends on buying and selling new stuff mostly from other countries like China. If people started to mend and recycle rather than buy new our economy would collapse!

I had this nonsense when a chap was about to throw some useful wood away and I offered to take it. The council officials saw what was going on and came running over to stop us. The chap giving it to me got quite cross so we both drove out and stopped right outside the entrance where we did the change over in full view of the council chap. Then went back in and dumped the other rubbish. :)
