I'd say dvds are ever so slightly more convenient than vhs, now more modern options are available.

Can we cut the c**p about DVDs? There are more films and information out there on DVDs then you can stream...if you can find it in the first place.

We looked at the pathetic offerings on Netflix and Now TV and gave up. There is so much cr*p on both of those channels.

Youtube? I know of a lot of people who spend their sad little lives just watching Youtube clips.

Steve Maskery has asked me to make a clarification about my post because he doesn't trust himself to play nice and frankly - I cannot blame him.

His DVD's started around 2007 not the 1990's - However I personally still think this is well inside the time of widespread, reliable internet coverage with decent streaming speeds (I know this is a fact because I have had broadband in various forms since 2001 and in 2016 my friend in Brecon still has problems); so Steve's choice of delivery medium, at that time and STILL today for many, makes a great deal of sense.

Yes slightly! Even Blu Ray sales are down though.

It's been many years since I bought or watched a DVD and even the last software package I bought was a download, physical disc not being even an option.

Streaming is not a very practical option in many places, especially to those of us whose workshop is down the garden, out of range of the house wifi.

But I just converted my copy of Steve's DVDs to MP4 format (for my own use only, obviously), and it was very easy. They are now in my itunes/iCloud account too. So now I have the films conveniently viewable on the iPad or even iPhone. They look great!

Threads such as this amuse me as I have absolutely no idea what what an MP4, iPad, iCloud, iPhone, streaming, Blu Ray, casting, Netflix etc. are. How on earth do I survive? (I'm only 63, incidentally - I didn't know what an email was up until five years ago :D ). I suppose not having the slightest interest in computer technology, films, fashion, stardom etc. and absolutely no interest in what other people do with their lives has something to do with it has some bearing. I find it surprising sometimes that I have to explain to people that not only do I not know how to use what they are talking about, I don't even know what they are talking about. My daughter accused me of being a dinosaur the other day - I reminded her that in her lifetime her great grandmother had never driven a motor vehicle, held a bank account, had a bathroom or even an indoor toilet ... and had lived in the same house for sixty eight years without ever locking a door

I think there are alot of positives to take from this thread, if read from start to finish.

No doubt whatsoever Steves videos are highly highly highly rated.

There's definitely an interest in having it available to view on tablets/phones etc (some people have done it themselves)

People who have viewed the dvds on massive t.v say the video qualities more than adequate enough as is.

The option to have it delivered by another format, be it streamed or download, would be handy for many people.

Over the many years of viewing posts about workshop essentials videos, I've NEVER ever read a single negative review about the videos content !

Perhaps the only drawback, is by having only one way of viewing content. If there's another video that also offers similar but is easier to view then you can't be blamed for choosing the easier option ;)

Stay safe and avoid the chisel.

phil.p ............ that brought a smile to me this morning. Thank you. I thought I was the one who was way behind everyone, particularly my children and grandchildren, who take these things for granted. I have used coputers for buisiness years ago, but my mobile phoe hardly ever gets used and I tell others that the main landline is what I use. I's slowly getting there but at 75 already, memory is not the best, so unless I use these things regularly, I have to almost start again next time. Our new Smart TV is a great jump, but I must say that we are really enjoying the big screen and soundbar.

Remember when your phone was attached to the wall and you answered it without knowing who the caller was?

Amazing that we're all still alive really.

You're a Dinosaur Phil :)

I can't imagine why anyone would be interested in what gadgets I own, and frankly I have no interest in what anyone else uses. Live and let live and all that.

However, it seems to me it has for some time now just become an argument about Steve Maskery's business. If Steve wants advice I am sure he can ask for it, otherwise it is his business. If there is nothing left to say on the topic the OP started with I would suggest this thread is locked.

Terry.

Rafezetter,

Thank you for rubbishing the stupid post about Steve.
Your words where far superior than I could have put it. What you say is an accurate précis of events and should have been perfectly obvious to anyone here who has been paying attention.

I just want to add one point:
I watch a few of these free u tubes and cringe at how dangerous the advice is. Steve has always carefully checked that what he advises is safe.
Anyone who thinks “health n safety has gorn mad” wants to spend a weekend day in the local A&E to see how prevalent life changing DIY inflicted injuries are.

It replaced the safe (but not for the environment) CFC's, its in all aerosols now I think.

I've only £2.78 left on my phone, I must put some money on it in the next six months. Two years ago it had ten quid on it - it eats money! :D

you can say what you want about u tube but it is a the best source for information about most subjects out there bar none. and as for Health and safety you just use your common sense

i just checked this thread after someone mailed me today to tell me not to worry about what was written here

to be honest i fully expected to be torn to shreds, my post did sound angry and i apologise for winding anyone up,

what i didnt expect was that most of what would be levelled at me would be my grasp of english. you are right its terrible ive never been much use at writing or spelling, i can "read" and speak english, german and bulgarian in cyrillic but my writing and grammar in all of them is terrible. when it comes to the written language i have a lot to be humble about :p

you are also right in that i dont try to do everything to the best of my ability if something doesnt interest me then as you said im lazy, therefore you will be unlikely to see me using capitals or correct grammar or spelling anytime soon.

my post was an over reaction but it seemed like the forum was being policed, i know for sure that nobody should be made to feel guilty for sharing here,

i thought it over and my post was a bit brutal towards steve, it probably stems from my own laziness, i cant be bothered waiting for a dvd to come, and i dont own a dvd player despite the previous comment form another member, im used to getting instant gratification on youtube. i have a screen in my workshop and i just use my phone and that.

so yes ive not given steve credit where credit was due,hes contributed massively shared a lot and it would be a shame if he hadn't made much from his dvds, i shouldn't have ranted about content or its delivery. i should have stopped at asking roger not to try make people feeling guilty for posting

as for the comment about taking pride in doing everything to the best of your ability in reference to my writing, if thats the best youve got on someone then you probably dont have much going for you, just snobbery nothing else, youve tried to use it as some kind of class character assassination of me.

anyway feel free to mock my writing it bothers me not one bit

you can say what you want about u tube but it is a the best source for information about most subjects

I agree everyone in the UK can buy a woodwork book or indeed Steves's DVD's but there is no substitute to going to a club to get hints and tips from expert users about bandsaw scroll saw turning etc unfortunatly some of us have not got the oppertunity to do this either because of distance or lack of clubs in their area or in my case club at their maximum membership and nor seeking anymore members.
So this is where utube is so important it has taught me how to turn wood (mainly pens) how to set up bandsaw (yes I used the Alex Snodgrass method) how to sharpen plane irons and chisels (thankyou Paul Sellars) how to make jigs for tablesaws and bandsaws and other power tools (thankyou Matthias Wandel) and now starting to learn how to use the Scrollsaw thanks to S Goode and the scrollsawparadise site All the above would not be possible for me if it was not for utube in fact I would go as far as probably not being on here and having nothing much to do with wood at all. My journey started with me having the idea to make my own picture frames with what little tools I had then failing misrably until I watched a few utube videos and learning how to make a jig.
