I know i'm going for festool, i know i'm going for the TS55 but i don't know what model. Do you need the top model with all the bits or not, as this looks near the £400 mark with the rail.

Andy

Why not buck the trend and go Mafell? Their equivalant is the KSP55F - and they make the OF2000 router for Festool, too. Haven't got one of their saws, but the 3 Mafell machines I have are just as impressive as the Festools.... Just playing Devil's Advocate.

hmm, i have been looking at this saw too. I don't want to sound like i'm jumping on the festool waggon but i think the whole festool system offers me more than the Mafell does.

Without dismissing the Mafell, does this have a 32mm hole guide system as the festool?

Andy

No 32mm - but that only applies if you are doing dowel construction and are going to buy a Festool router (for which Mafell have instead the DD40 Duo Dowler - a much faster system). If you are using biscuits or the DD40 to do your carcasses then there is no advantage I can see in the Festool system

one thing i do like is the MFT which will sort out the cross cutting issues.

I didn't realize that the Mafell didn't cut to the rail as the festool does and that it doesn't cut at 45 to the rail either. Both of these are big selling points at the moment.

9/7 to festool at the moment

I have just built a kitchen carcass to fit a very strange shaped area. This thread https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7198&highlight=carcass
shows the shape. I cut the bevelled edges (different angles at each join) using my Festool. It cut the edges precisely where it said it would and precisely at the angle I set it to (OK - after a wee bit of trial and error).

Every day I use it I am so pleased I bought it. I also bought John E's MFT and am equipping that with some add-on goodies. I'm sold :D

Roger

Mafell are the only company to offer a portable saw with scoring facility, the KST 55SE (here then follow links for KST 55 S / KST 55 SE).

BTW the small Mafell router (the OF50e) is made by Festool, the larger Festool 2000 router is made by Mafell. Mafell also designed and make the front end of the Atlas-Copco/AEG biscuit jointers.

Scrit, what made you go down the Mafell route and not the Festool??

Andy (only 3 days to purchase date)

There seems to be this big issue that it's difficult to cut to a line using the Mafell. It's not! I never have any problems. I'm sure there are many other Mafell users who will say the same.

Dave

I have the Mafell ksp55 with guide rail the Mafell Biscut jointer LNF20 and the orbital sander UT150 and all are top.

quality build and very durable and very accurate

Mafell is the inventer of all new woodworking methods like the duo dowler dd40 the KSP40 Fledistem, the pss3100 portable panel saw system, they are leading edge.

and yes the Germans have their act together whenn it comes about engineering.

What to go for??? its more of a personal choice both companies do the full range of products a woodworker would like to have

Its what you can afford and most of all what you need (not for now but in years to come!!!!!!!!!!!) never and i repeat never buy to small

but that is my IIRC
