I have just purchased a new Axminster slide mitre saw and am wondering are there any opinions out there about this equipment?
Also does anyone have suggestions about which type of blade to use for cutting plastics and/or acrylics? What rate of cut etc?
Also "Router & Power Woodworking" magazine (April/May 2008 issue) has drawings for a router table. Has anybody taken up the challenge to produce such a table?

I can't help you with the saw, but if you do a search for "router table", you will find plenty of threade and some excelent WIPS for home made tables.

Here is an excelent one by Martin. Based on the New Yankee version.

If you have a look through the blades on Axminster's website (or, in their catalogue), they'll probably be some information which tells you the suitable applications for each blade. I think you're generally looking for something with 100 teeth?

CMT and Freud are two manufacturer's I'd recommend as some of the best around, while still easily affordable.

Does this saw have variable speed dial of some sort? If it does (and I'd be surprised!), you want to run it on a slow speed when cutting any plastics or metals - same as you would do on a bandsaw.

You want a multi-material blade for plastics ali section etc. Basically any good triple chip blade with 80t or so should do the job. I know you need to use a blade lubricant for cutting metal but I don't know about plastics. The blade speed on the saw will be fixed but on a slider you can adjust the actual cut speed by how fast you push the saw through the cut. I suspect a little trial on some non-vital material will be in order.

:D Thanks guys for all the information. It's been most helpful and I'm glad I found the website and joined.
I hope I can contact any of you direct for more info. When you're not in the workshops!!

I've got the Axminster sliding mitre saw and I use a CMT blade with 60T but only for cutting timber. It must be good, all the neighbours come in wanting to use. :)

Perhaps tradesmen might need higher spec. but it serves my purpose in the shed.
